Merrill James
[edit]What is the justification for referring to her as Merrill James rather than Merrill?
She married Judge William Francis James in 1933, so it is clearly incorrect to refer to her as James before that date, as in "James earned a Ph.D. in psychology from Stanford in 1923"
But after her marriage her publications still credit her as Merrill, for example in the 1937 copy I have of "Measuring Intelligence" she is Maud A. Merrill, and the APA listing for her book "Problems of child delinquency" (1947) cites her as Merrill, M. A. The APA bio which is cited refers to her exclusively as Merrill, and the feministvoices pieces, also cited, states "Occasionally referred to by some as Merrill-James (or Merrill James), by all indications Merrill did not change her name after marriage."
If there is evidence that she wished to be called Merrill James, fine, but in that case everything before 1933 should use Merrill. If not, the whole article should refer to her as Merrill. I'll await comments before making any changes.
I've added a link in the disambiguation page, so that you can at least find her from her published name! Kognos (talk) 20:56, 22 July 2018 (UTC)
- I can’t remember what influenced me to use that name at the time, but I’m fine if you turn the redirect Maud Merrill into the target. EricEnfermero (Talk) 21:39, 22 July 2018 (UTC)
