FYI for the family of Mary Stuart, future editors

[edit]

I made some edits, but upon finding a Website run by Mary Stuart's family, I see that they link back to this Wikipedia page for their bio of her.

I'm leaving this comment here to let them know (if they ever see it), that generally it's frowned upon to write articles on subjects you yourself are close to. Wikipedia works to eliminate bias in the writing of all articles, and some editors can be unyielding in their harshness on this topic.

However, I see that this is such a labor of love, not only for Mary but for information that would otherwise languish in our hearts and minds. All this to say: thank you for starting this article! I'm appreciative of the work, and fascinated by Mary's life and legacy.

I took it upon myself to give this article a little more work to ensure the article is in line with those wikipedia standards above. I've added inline citations, and removed some erroneous information that was better suited for the Search for Tomorrow page instead. I also made the proper edits to some grammatical issues, removed extra spaces where I saw them, and added some new formatting so it's a little easier to read.

I've left some open ends here, and I'm hoping to come back with more research once I have some more secondary sources at the ready. Thanks for your patience! For fellow editors, please feel free to remove, edit, or cut any of the changes I've made. Thanks! MerlinCat2 (talk) 19:12, 27 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@MerlinCat2, Thanks for your work in developing this article. I have added some citations and content from newspapers and magazines that I could find. Eddie Blick (talk) 02:56, 28 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Additional note on Mary Stuart, and her relationship with Richard Krolik

[edit]

An earlier addition to this article cited Mary's first husband, Richard, as abusive and cited her book. The specific passage is as follows:

"She later alleged in her book, Both of Me, that Krolik was a frequently verbally abusive husband. She recounted that she had secretly been writing a children's book. When she showed the manuscript to Krolik, he threw it across the room, yelling, "How do you expect to write a book if you've never read one?"  The incident discouraged Stuart so much that she never sought out a publisher. Her husband left New York to work at Time/Life Broadcasting in Washington, D.C."

However, Mary's own writing on this in her book doesn't describe Richard as 'throwing' the book across the room, but instead that he joked "hey, you wrote a book and you never read one," which was understandably devastating to Mary, as Richard is routinely distant and cold towards Mary. I searched through the book using the Internet Archive's Open Library, where Both of Me is available (as of July 2023), so there may be something that I missed through the keyword search.

I'm not interested in denying that Richard was abusive, but I went ahead and changed the language to reflect Mary's own words on the topic, rather than this above passage. The in-book description also contradicts the above passage, as it states she had shown Richard the completed manuscript, and the note from Viking Press that they were interested in her book.

Earlier passages in the book details her loneliness at home, the pressure of being a mother with a distant and frankly unengaged husband (who frequently dismissed and belittled her interests, and diminished her own accomplishments), and the pressures of Search for Tomorrow. If anyone can find a source that contradicts the one from her book (or even find where it describes the above incident in her book), that would be greatly appreciated!
