I notice that there was supposedly a picture of Martin Travers here, but that it has been de-linked. I have images in my possession which I hope to be able to use, so that his article can be properly illustrated. My late mother was married to him for about a year, till his death in 1948, though I am not related to him, having been born in the early 1950s. I am about to amend his forenames, because I have a copy of his passport Number 255974, issued 30th July 1934, in front of me as I type: and, in fact, his name at birth was Howard Mantin Otho Travers, though he is universally referred to as 'Martin'. However, 'Mantin' is not a mistake, but probably a family name (cf. Rebecca Mantin, ITV newsreader)
I have now received a letter from a gentleman who has more documentary evidence about Martin Travers' name than the passport mentioned above. I am pleased to be able to report that the Passport Office clerk in 1934 wrote the name out by hand, in capitals, but must have misread the name 'Martin', as 'Mantin', as this is what was written in the passport. However, it is clear from the other documents which are available to my correspondent, that Travers was given the name 'Martin' on his birth certificate. I am pleased to be able to approve the correction of this somewhat puzzling anomaly. My researches had involved contacting Rebecca Mantin, who could shed no light on the matter!
I have a half-bushel measure which came to me through my late mother, who had it from Travers, and she mentioned that his family had some connection with the brewery trade in East Anglia, which would account for the half-bushel. She also mentioned that the original logo for the Greene King Brewery was designed by Martin Travers: and a version of it is still in use by that firm today.
