There are two explanations regarding the husband's broken sword on the floor. This commentary gives the conventional explanation that the broken sword has been used in a fight of some sort. This is not the case, in the circumstances, especially with the sword still in its scabbard i.e. unused but broken, it is an allusion to the husband's impotence. The chipped nose of the bust is accepted as being an allusion to his impotence and the sword is a repeat. This also explains his dejected expression.

Any thoughts anybody? Rickedmo (talk) 01:46, 28 June 2008 (UTC)
I have changed the text to include the above. Continuing on, the implication of the very unlady-like pose of the wife with her legs wide apart and the strategically positioned damp patch on her dress is that she has recently had sex. This explains the contented and pleased look on her face.
There is therfore a deliberate contrast between the unhappy impotent husband who has visited a brothel but was unable to perform and the contented wife who has recently had adulterous sex.
Again, I don't want to change the text without some feedback. Any thoughts anybody?
