Pronunciation

[edit]

We used to claim the pronunciation was "STEIN-house", which was totally unhelpful. (Does "stein" rhyme with "sane", "seen", or "sign"?) I replaced it with "STAIN-house" which I think is the right pronunciation based on this, which is not authoritative enough to include in the article itself. --Doradus 16:47, 12 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The English word stein has only one pronunciation listed at either Wiktionary or dictionary.com (rhymes with sign). The original reference was to the Buffalo News -- why was that not good enough? --MrBoo (talk, contribs) 21:02, 17 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Ok I see. I wasn't seeing "stein" as the English word. I still lean toward "stain-house" based on the NLL announcers' pronunciation guide and the indications from Mr. Steenhuis himself (as described on the link I gave). I also don't consider newspapers authoritative, having seen (and been a part of) a number of errors and "creative license" in newspapers before. However, if the newspapers are good enough for Wikipedia, I won't object if you want to revert to STEIN-house (or, better yet, STINE-house). --Doradus 04:12, 18 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
