Birth of Marcus Clarke

[edit]

The article gives his birth year as 1846, no doubt based on secondary sources such as the ODNB. However I believe it just may have been 1845 for two reasons and would welcome comment. First, in the 1851 UK census, conducted on 30 March, his age is given by his father as 6. Second, in the Highgate School Register, 1st edition 1913, recording his entry there in June 1858, his birth date is given as 24 April 1845. [This would mean he was in fact 5 on census day, or 4 if born in 1846.] I note also that his birth appears to have been registered in 1846, but this was in the early years of registration so may have been delayed. I imagine that if his baptism is recorded that may be conclusive. Clarke's age is given as 23 on his Australian marriage certificate in July 1869 so I guess he believed he was born in 1846! Can anyone help further? GooglerW (talk) 12:04, 19 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

You will need to conduct your research somewhere else, since we Wikipedia editors are expressely banned from including original research in any of our articles; and, by extension, from conducting such research in the talk pages. If you can find some reliable external published source that suggests an 1845 birth, that can perhaps be included here.
You may well be right, and I wish you well in your endeavours. -- Jack of Oz [pleasantries] 23:28, 19 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. I did state above a reliable published (1913) source for 1845 birth within WP rules and am aware of WP:NOR and in particular WP:PSTS. To clarify my unskilful request: I propose to change the dob in the article citing the book mentioned but await other editors' comments on whether other sources should be relied on for the thus far unreferenced information about his birth. I trust that is not inappropriate for the Talk page. GooglerW (talk) 08:10, 20 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
