For a moment I thought it said comma crisis. EEng 17:53, 20 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Comma versus semicolon

[edit]

There's been a rather crazy dispute between myself and User:The Banner regarding a switch in punctuation by me from a comma to a semicolon. I think it's an improvement, because it fixes what I now know is known as a comma splice. The Banner thinks otherwise.

@The Banner: I genuinely am interested, despite the turn that this somehow took, to hear your views on why you don't like the change. Clearly, you don't, but if I knew why perhaps we might get somewhere here. Hopefully we can move on constructively. 92.24.246.11 (talk) 16:46, 20 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Seeing the aggressive behaviour of you, I do not expect a serious discussion about the subject. Try some apologies first... The Banner talk 18:23, 20 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not an English professor, but I'm fairly confident that the semicolon is preferable, and that the comma usage in that context does appear to be a comma splice. OhNoitsJamie Talk 18:38, 20 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
The semicolon is obviously preferable here. TheBanner, you've just responded to a polite and substantive comment with a strictly personal one -- I think some self-reflection would be wise. --JBL (talk) 18:55, 20 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
You could also have cut the sentence in two. The Banner talk 19:01, 20 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Not sure why you didn't just do that at the time, I've certainly got no objections to that version. I'm not sure it's needed; I'm fine with either option. 92.24.246.11 (talk) 19:17, 20 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
You had already reverted before I could do that... The Banner talk 19:47, 20 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Why not just change instead of reverting and moving on? 92.24.246.11 (talk) 20:01, 20 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I can ask the same question to you. The Banner talk 20:40, 20 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, you can't. I did change the article to remove the comma splice. It was you who restored it, and you who wouldn't say why, which is what has led to us all being here talking about a comma. 92.24.246.11 (talk) 20:46, 20 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

what about his family - nobels or what? socialisation and such? THANKS.

"van" isn't as distinguished as "von". You can try to research this yourself but it's not actually that likely. 1Veertje (talk) 09:45, 19 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
