Comma versus semicolon

There's been a rather crazy dispute between myself and User:The Banner regarding a switch in punctuation by me from a comma to a semicolon. I think it's an improvement, because it fixes what I now know is known as a comma splice. The Banner thinks otherwise.

@The Banner: I genuinely am interested, despite the turn that this somehow took, to hear your views on why you don't like the change.
