Field marshal (France) → Maréchal de camp – In English, Field Marshal refers to an officer who ranks above full generals (the only sort-of exception I can think of is when the old Austrian rank Feldmarschallleutnant is translated literally). It is almost wilfully misleading in English to refer to French maréchals de camp as Field Marshals and I've never encountered a source which does so. Even on wikipedia the majority of articles that link to this page are redirects from Maréchal de camp. I think in this case, an article title that preserves the distinction between French maréchals de camp and higher-ranking Field Marshals in other armies is preferable to an article title that is merely a literal (and rarely used) English translation of the French term. - Support "Field marshal (France)" should be a disambiguation page, between Marechal de camp, Marshal General of France, Marshal of France and Marshal of the Empire. 76.65.129.5 (talk) 05:14, 15 September 2011 (UTC)
- Support. Never translated as Field Marshal by military writers, but always left in the original French to prevent confusion. Obsessive translation into English is neither necessary nor useful. -- Necrothesp (talk) 14:01, 20 September 2011 (UTC)
- Support as nominator explained. Neutralitytalk 20:41, 21 September 2011 (UTC)

No more 'Field Marshal'
[edit]I removed all inappropriate usages of Field Marshal from the body of the article. See the earlier archived discussion for justification. Bazuz (talk) 12:31, 17 December 2011 (UTC)
