Tabernae
[edit]The subheading 'Tabernae' gives a description of these establishments, and a link to the main article on the subject (Taberna). However, the description in the main article is completely different: here it is a roadside inn or hostel, in the main article it is a shop within an urban environment. Could someone with appropriate knowledge clear up the confusion, please? — Preceding unsigned comment added by RoryKat (talk • contribs) 09:55, 14 October 2015 (UTC)

Villa? Government funding?
[edit]"These substantial structures, normally in the form of a villa..."
A villa was a large, luxurious, prestigious rural building set in landscaped grounds, primarily a family home, though it might have included accommodation for numerous guests. A mansio was a purpose-built hostel, simple, functional, built for service, not indulgence.
I suggest the removal of 'normally in the form of a villa'.
"...maintained by the central government..."
While it is true that mansiones existed to accommodate travelling officials and dignitaries, as with the roads, once the structure was completed, maintenance was at least partly a local matter. Well maintained roads and facilities were a matter of prestige and pride for the local landowner, and Rome could not shoulder the costs of maintaining an ever-expanding and costly network.
I suggest the removal of "...maintained by the central government..." or changing it to "...maintained partly by the central government..." Mygodfrey (talk) 14:49, 12 September 2024 (UTC)
