[edit]I restored this article to "Manhole." I, too, support society's use of gender-neutral language, but Wikipedia uses the most common name for a subject, not the name that we wish was most common (ie maintenence hole). youngamerican (ahoy hoy) 01:31, 21 November 2006 (UTC)
- I agree, a manhole is universally known as a manhole. Trumpy 12:01, 3 October 2007 (UTC)
In the UK, some holes commonly known as manholes are, more accurately, "rodding points". A manhole is one which a man (or woman) can climb into. 80.177.101.119 (talk) 16:45, 10 June 2009 (UTC)
Gorrammit, this article is terrible. Here I was hoping for a reasonably long and thorough article I could just spork for Uncyclopedia, but no-oo... it's so... short and missing all the useful details... like where did they start? Now I have to make something up. 71.34.120.187 (talk) 02:39, 7 June 2010 (UTC)
speaking of names for it...
[edit]... this
- utility hole, cable chamber, maintenance hole, inspection chamber, access chamber, sewer hole, smellhole, flabhole, ding-dong or confined space
is a rather impressive list, but unsourced. I'm rather wondering especially about "smellhole", "flabhole", and "ding-dong". --Thnidu (talk) 15:58, 31 August 2016 (UTC)
"alternatively"?
[edit]"A manhole (alternatively utility hole, cable chamber, maintenance hole, inspection chamber, access chamber, sewer hole, or confined space) is the top opening to an underground utility vault "
I've been a sewer inspector for 6+ years and some of these are alternative names for the chamber/vault underneath a manhole, and do not refer to the top opening specifically. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 208.114.165.146 (talk) 09:55, 8 August 2017 (UTC)

Usage section does not explain usage
[edit]The Usage section does not explain what manholes are for, nor how they are used. 75.174.111.115 (talk) 21:37, 16 July 2019 (UTC)
- I've split up the section, as well as some other general clean up and adding a gallery section. Andrew Lorimer (talk) 00:19, 17 July 2019 (UTC)
Dutch page link
[edit]The Dutch page links to https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Putdeksel, which is actually manhole cover. Instead, it should link to https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rioolput. I am not good at wikipedia, so I hope someone else will do the necessary. 217.71.0.53 (talk) 17:45, 19 April 2021 (UTC)
Man sized
[edit]Say if the diameter needs to be man-sized, in order to be a manhole. Jidanni (talk) 13:52, 4 October 2023 (UTC)
