Merging Festival of Lights

The following discussion is a concluded merger debate of the {}. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. No further edits should be made to this section.

{} the merger Failed (1+ for, 0 against) for insufficient support. I would suggest if parties remain displeased with the article status they renominate it in a year for merger. TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/tcfkaWCDbwincowtchatlotpsoplrttaDCLaM) 23:31, 25 June 2007 (UTC)

That is a very interesting article to merge. If it can be sourced it should be merged. TonyTheTiger (talk/cont/bio/tcfkaWCDbwincowtchatlotpsoplrttaDCLaM) 06:51, 17 May 2007 (UTC)

GA Review

The article starts out very good, well written, well referenced. There's a few minor typos here and there that should be fixed, so a good copyedit would help. There's also two pretty obvious, major statements that really need to be referenced (or removed):

  • In the LEAD: "The Magnificent Mile includes 3.1 million sq. ft. (288,000 sq. m) of retail space, 460 stores, 275 restaurants, 51 hotels, and a host of sightseeing and entertainment attractions to more than 22 million visitors annually."
  • In the seasonal events section, with regard to the statement on the holiday events: "It is considered the first annual Holiday event of the year in the nation."

But the bigger issue that I see with this article is that it's very table-heavy. The 'today' section has several tables which, while they contain interesting information, seem to awkwardly break up the text, and could probably be presented in a better way. Why are these buildings and structures significant? Instead of just listing a bunch of "significant" buildings.

After the 'malls' subsection heading, the article pretty much loses me. It's just two big tables containing non-encyclopedic and directory-like information about the malls and intersections. Huh? If I wanted a directory of this information, I wouldn't go to wikipedia; I'd probably go to an online map or a tourist site that has a map. Even for this article, I think a map might be a better way of presenting this information.

The 'gallery' section is really too large. It's nice to have a good collection of photos, but this is supposed to be an encyclopedia article, not flickr. Perhaps the gallery section could be transferred to wikimedia commons and a link placed under 'see also' with links to the commons under the keyword 'magnificent mile'.

That's pretty much the major things I see with the article. Hope this helps! Good luck! Dr. Cash 02:16, 12 July 2007 (UTC)

WikiProject class rating

This article was automatically assessed because at least one WikiProject had rated the article as start, and the rating on other projects was brought up to start class. BetacommandBot 16:21, 31 August 2007 (UTC)

NHL Date

Is there a need for this column? It seems pretty worthless here.

GA Review

This review is transcluded from Talk:Magnificent Mile/GA2. The edit link for this section can be used to add comments to the review.

Overall, I think this article is very good, and can be promoted to GA pending a few minor updates:

GA review (see here for criteria)
  1. It is reasonably well written.
    a (prose): b (MoS):
  2. It is factually accurate and verifiable.
a (references): b (citations to reliable sources): c (OR):
  3. It is broad in its coverage.
    a (major aspects): b (focused):
  4. It follows the neutral point of view policy.
    Fair representation without bias:
  5. It is stable.
    No edit wars etc.:
  6. It is illustrated by images, where possible and appropriate.
a (images are tagged and non-free images have fair use rationales): b (appropriate use with suitable captions):
  7. Overall:
    Pass/Fail:
  • In the 'today' section, under 'overview', at the very end it's talking about hotels, and then there's a sentence about, "The seasons each add their own flavor to the Magnificent Mile." This seems out of place. There's a part later on talking about this, so this could probably be removed from this section (though the reference citation attached to it might be used later on).
    Done.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTM) 22:41, 12 June 2009 (UTC)
  • In the landmarks table, there's two columns for NRHP Date and NHL Date, but the article doesn't refer to these. The data here is also incomplete. I'd either remove the columns or complete the table.
Not every Chicago Landmark is a National Historic Landmark. The table is complete to the best of my knowledge.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTM) 22:43, 12 June 2009 (UTC)
  • In the 'seasonal events' section, the sentence: "2009 will see the 18th annual Magnificent Mile Lights Festival, presented by Harris, which will be the annual kick-off to the nation's holiday season." Specifically, the last part about it being the kick-off to the nation's holiday season, seems to not be WP:NPOV -- nationally, I think the Macy's Thanksgiving Parade in NYC is probably a bit bigger, so this just doesn't seem quite right. It's undoubtedly a pretty big regional event, though.
As I understand it this occurs the weekend before the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. Thus, I am not sure what your complaint is. It is less well-known for sure, but it is earlier. The MTDP is Thanksgiving day and this is the weekend before.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTM) 22:48, 12 June 2009 (UTC)
  • There's a 'no free image' placeholder for the image of 430 North.
I presume you would prefer it without the placeholder, although I do not know why. I have removed it.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTM) 22:53, 12 June 2009 (UTC)

I think once these issues are resolved, the article can be a GA. Cheers! Dr. Cash (talk) 14:50, 12 June 2009 (UTC)

The article is now a GA. Nice work! Dr. Cash (talk) 18:14, 24 June 2009 (UTC)

Coming here as someone who has never been to Chicago before, this article is not clear that if you want to walk the magnificent mile then what you want is Michigan Avenue. It's not clear on the map that it's the black not the purple line, and it's necessary to go to a different map to confirm which road that is. Mike163 (talk) 14:58, 20 October 2012 (UTC)

Shops and business names

Is it really a good idea to list all those stores and businesses? Who is going to update that section every six months or a year to delete the businesses that have left and add the new ones that have moved in? Risssa (talk) 20:57, 12 January 2013 (UTC)
