Green Bus Orions were NOT from WMATA!
[edit]Green Bus's 5500 series Orions were not built for WMATA! they were built for New Orleans RTA. As evidence I offer:
In 1997, New Orl;eans RTA appears to have ordered 85 Orion 5's, to be numbered 97300-97384. During construction, 21 buses were rejected as follows:
Serials:
33215-253,255-296,298-301 New Orleans 97300-97384, 97319 to Green 5537, 97224 to Queens Surface 704, 97327 to Green 5544, 97331 to Red & Tan 1006, 97333-334 to Green 5538,5540, 97338 to Green 5541, 97340 to Red & Tan 1004, 97341 to Green 5542, 97344 to Red & Tan 1014, 97350 to Gray Line Houston 4021, 97351-352 to Red & Tan 1016,1002, 97356 to Red & Tan 1010, 97359 to Green 5539, 97360 to Red & Tan 1008, 97368 to Gray Line Houston 4022, 97369 to Green 5543, 97370 to Gray Line Houston 4023, 37375 to Red & Tan 1012, 97377 to Red & Tan 1028. Buses intended to be 97378-97384 were delivered as (2nd) 97319,97324,97327,97331,97333,97334,97338
The second part of the bus order was planned as 69 buses (97385-97453?? or 98400-98468??), serials 33405-416,418-427,429-435,446-472,475-487. However, only 13 were actually delivered to New Orleans. Serials 33405-11,13-15,18-20 came as (2nd) 97340,97341,97344,97350-97352,97356,97359,97360,97368-97370,97375, leaving the order with a final count of 76 buses, with 78 delivered to others. Of the 56 not delivered to New Orleans from this second batch, 36 went to Green as 5501-5536, 5 to Queens Surface as 700-703,705, 2 to Gray Line-Houston as 4020 and 4024, 4 to Valley as 3001,3012,3016,3017, 8 to HAML as 400-407, 1 to Arrow as 3505.
WMATA got their batch soon afterwards (Orion serials are assigned in build order). WMATA 4202-4412 are serials 33488-33698. Note the block is continuous.
A few months later, New Orleans did get another order from Orion, for 67 buses (98400-98466). Sadly, the vast majority of both the 97300 and 97400 series were destroyed in the Katrina disaster.

Additional column to show units in service
[edit]For the 1990's fleet roster, i have added another column to show what units are still in service. It would be easier that way to determine which units are still in service, especially since there are buses that are being retired within the 1990's fleet roster. --Xxshadow93xx (talk) 15:32, 25 June 2012 (UTC)
Numerous issues with this article
[edit]This list contains a level of excess detail that does not interest a general audience, and almost none of it is sourced. Information such as which buses are out of service, or the details about the powertrain each bus has, does not belong on Wikipedia and should be removed. I have placed {{railfan editnotice}} on this page with little success, and the edit warring has resumed by the same users with no signs of abating. Please use this section to discuss, as have been suggested by administrators responding to the 3RR reports. Continued failure to do so will result in blocks and/or further page protection. The same holds true for photos - nobody WP:OWNs this article nor is it meant to serve to promote a user's photo gallery. Pinging @Mtattrain and Olsen24: as well as @Pi.1415926535: who has some experience dealing with this sort of issue at MBTA Bus. – Train2104 (t • c) 03:35, 31 October 2017 (UTC)
> Powertrain details have been present on this particular page long before I started contributing (or probably seen as "vandalizing" by some) to the page, though admittedly some excess detail was added over time, not particularly by me (though I probably had a say in that detail here and there). To comply with the citations, I've been trying to give reasonable sources for "excess" detail (wreck units), placing citation needed for info that is correct. However, there is no way to source buses being retired in masses, since every roster out there is fan-made in a way, and will probably be deemed un-reliable right off the spot by admins. As for photos, the other user in question has been promoting his or her gallery, so I have no say for that - he or she should talk about his or her rationale. Mtattrain (talk) 16:14, 31 October 2017 (UTC)
> Adding on, while I don't agree with removing the amount of retiring buses in service, I honestly don't mind removing the amount of newer buses in service, as eventually the information will be wiped out. Don't think other users are with this idea though. Mtattrain (talk) 19:41, 31 October 2017 (UTC)
I agree with Mtattrain. SportsFan007 (talk) 19:47, 31 October 2017 (UTC)SportsFan007
> Regarding the quantity of retiring buses, the MBTA Bus article, which I think one of the pinged users contributes to, has a number of active units column, further suggesting that such info shouldn't be removed from the article (unless he or she eventually plans to). As a heads up, I am reverting an edit on photos (mainly by user Olsen24) to one with more acceptable quality photos - in no way is this "promoting anyone's gallery," as I am not promoting my photos at all; in fact, as I see it, I am trying to do the reverse of "promoting user Olsen24's gallery." Don't know if everyone else will agree, but I just want to explain my rationale for removing Olsen24's images. Pinging @Train2104:. Mtattrain (talk) 21:29, 4 November 2017 (UTC)

Removal of information
[edit]As per admin suggestions, I'll start the process of removing information deemed to be trivial. Initially, I will remove totally unsourced information and stuff that can be easily found on CPTDB wiki's article, but I will look into removing or rewording phrases regarding OOS units and whatnot. Suggestion for the Local and Limited bus fleet section
[edit]Can the Local and Limited bus fleet be divided into regular buses and articulated buses? SportsFan007 (talk) 03:05, 13 December 2017 (UTC)SportsFan007
> To be fair, the "Length" column differentiates the buses pretty well (it actually could have been added when regular/articulated buses were joined from isolated sections, but I do not remember). Mtattrain (talk) 00:12, 14 December 2017 (UTC)

Locked
[edit]As over the last few days, especially, this page's history has become a warren of revert wars, I've locked the article from editing for a period of one week. The participants in editing the article are advised to discuss the content that is under dispute here on the talk page, and to come to a consensus about what should be included in the article, and what should be excluded, and how it should be presented, so that when the protection expires the article can be collegially and definitively set into an agreed-upon format. - The Bushranger One ping only 23:25, 17 December 2017 (UTC)
- @Olsen24: The fact you resumed reverting all but instantly upon the expiration of the protection, without having made any attempt at building consensus during the protection (and, in fact, essentially, not editing at all during it), could very easily be taken as being WP:POINTy. Communication is required as part of editing Wikipedia, and a full protection is for the purpose of editors communicating over the issue that led to the protection. - The Bushranger One ping only 03:45, 25 December 2017 (UTC)
- Alright, I'll start this rodeo then. I propose that we implement the following, which I believe are in line with the MOS and Wikipedia guidelines:
- Images: Each model of bus should have no more than one image per order (and, to reduce the length of the page, perhaps only one image per model). Images should show the whole bus with a wide enough crop to show at least some context; images like File:Novabus RTS on the Q27.jpg and File:MTA Bus QM4 bus at 55th St & 6th Ave.jpg are preferable to too-close crops like File:7026 S54.jpg. Images should be the highest quality available; a superior older image is preferable to an inferior but new image.
- Dimensions: Dimensions should always use {{convert}}, both in tables and in prose. Lengths should be given to the nearest foot; the purpose of giving lengths is to give the general size (40-foot rigid, 45-foot over-the-road, 60-foot artic), not the size to the hundredth of the foot. Since most local buses are low-floor and express buses are high-floor, that can be explained before the charts and only exceptions need be noted.
- Organization: The page should start with a general overview of the fleet (the lede, or a section), explaining concepts like the three basic sizes of buses, when the agency transitioned to low-floor buses, etc. It should then give charts for the local fleet, the express fleet, and the on-order fleet. The retired fleet can either have a link in the lede, or a section near the bottom with a paragraph; it should not be the first section of the page nor consist of a section with just a link.
- Bus numbers: Fleet number ranges should be cited if possible, as should the number of units assigned to SBS. Individual buses should not be mentioned by number for being out of service, nor for trivial modifications like bike racks or different batteries, nor for renumberings. Similarly, the exact numbers of the first few buses delivered or in service, or the last few, or even the exact quantity in service at any one time, are not important. However, conversions to an entirely different type of fuel can be reliably cited, as can units preserved in museums or historical fleets.
- Powertrain: The exact engine model, transmission, and/or battery type are unimportant; they are not useful to the reader seeking a general overview of the fleet or to identify a bus they saw. However, the general type of propulsion (diesel, hybrid, battery electric, etc) is useful and citeable.
- General information: Absolutely nothing should be included here that is not ultimately supportable by some reliable source (MTA fleet plan, contract awards, etc), even if some sources may take some time to dig up.
- I believe these guidelines should allow for a stable article (that does not require constant small edits for which reliable sources are impossible to find) that follows sitewide style and content policies. Pi.1415926535 (talk) 21:24, 25 December 2017 (UTC)
- Alright, I'll start this rodeo then. I propose that we implement the following, which I believe are in line with the MOS and Wikipedia guidelines:
- I agree to these guidelines except for dimensions. If buses are slightly longer or shorter than 40 or 60 ft it should ne indicated. Also, estimating the amount of SBS units is not more effective as buses are transferred frequently. Olsen24 (talk) 17:19, 26 December 2017 (UTC)
- @Pi.1415926535: How is this article supposed to be adequately sourced? The only websites that I have found that mention bus numbers and years ordered are fan websites.--Kew Gardens 613 (talk) 18:45, 26 December 2017 (UTC)
- Order years should be able to be established from documents like contract awards and fleet plans, which should be public documents (if sometimes tricky to find). Research papers / industry white papers and news stories can also fill in the gap. Two minutes of searching found some likely sources:
- Use of reliable sources is one of the cornerstones of Wikipedia. If information in this article cannot possibly be supported by reliable sources, then it should not be in the article. Pi.1415926535 (talk) 18:57, 26 December 2017 (UTC)
- I think that the articulated buses should be separated from the regular buses. SportsFan007 (talk) 20:24, 26 December 2017 (UTC)SporsFan007
- Standard and ARTICULATED buses are all part of the local fleet and therefore they should be together. Olsen24 (talk) 03:02, 27 December 2017 (UTC)
- @Olsen24: What I meant was separate tables in the Local Fleet section. SportsFan007 (talk) 03:09, 27 December 2017 (UTC)SportsFan007
- @SportsFan007: I know, i don't think that's necessary.Olsen24 (talk) 22:18, 27 December 2017 (UTC)
- @Olsen24: Please sign your messages. SportsFan007 (talk) 21:55, 27 December 2017 (UTC)SportsFan007
- @Olsen24: Per WP:TPO, please do not edit other editors' comments on talk pages. If you belive the wording of the proposed guideline should be different than what is proposed, make your own comment with your proposed change instead of editing Pi.1415926535's post. - The Bushranger One ping only 22:05, 27 December 2017 (UTC)
- @Olsen24: Why are you continuing to add overly precise lengths (which have no sources to support them) and reverting my reverts without comment? Your behavior is unacceptable. Pi.1415926535 (talk) 02:50, 30 December 2017 (UTC)
- @Pi.1415926535: The more specific lengths have been there before i started editing. I'm just keeping the trend going. I don't see the problem with it and the need for reverts.Olsen24 (talk) 03:12, 30 December 2017 (UTC)
Suggestion
[edit]Since fully electric powered buses are starting to be introduced can a power source column be added specifics whether the bus are gas-powered or electric-powered? SportsFan007 (talk) 01:31, 30 December 2017 (UTC)SportsFan007

Exact amount of SBS vehicles
[edit]I don't think the article should feature an exact amount of buses assigned to Select Bus Service, because buses are constantly wrapped and unwrapped from SBS duty. Mtattrain (talk) 08:31, 30 December 2017 (UTC)
I think an estimated amount should be written instead of an exact amount. Olsen24 (talk) 13:37, 30 December 2017 (UTC)
Linking to proterra

Regarding image replacements
[edit]@Olsen24, why are you so freaking concerned about having images on this particular article? Most users agree that many (not ALL) of your images are not better than the ones you are replacing, yet you treat not just my attempts but everyone else's attempts to restore some (again, NOT ALL) images as a "personal" injury to your ego (which transit fans in general seem to have very huge egos). 2018 Nova Bus order
[edit]I've noticed that this entry was somehow removed from the list and I don't know why. It seems that this page has had a lot of problems - specifically people editing it without regard to what is accurate and inaccurate, sourced and unsourced. This is a reason why I rarely ever contribute to Wikipedia anymore. Can someone please find out what happened? Wslupecki (talk) 08:14, 23 June 2018 (UTC)
- @Wslupecki: That order is Select Bus Service only and is listed here. SportsFan007 (talk) 19:47, 23 June 2018 (UTC)SportsFan007
> To be honest, it should be included in the original "local" fleet table - orders with a smaller group of units in SBS duty are not specifically isolated. Mtattrain (talk) 10:52, 13 October 2018 (UTC)

Local and Limited bus fleet
[edit]Can we add a column to indicate whether the buses are local and/or limited? SportsFan007 (talk) 19:42, 7 September 2019 (UTC)
not sure whether that's necessary since the local and limited fleet is the same. This is also subject to change frequently and could be hard to keep up with.199.79.168.209 (talk) 20:17, 9 September 2019 (UTC)

[edit]Are there any update on the D4500 retirements? and also the D4500CLs? SportsFan007 (talk) 19:45, 7 September 2019 (UTC)
The numbers regarding the D4500 (green signs) has not changed. There at 2 from 2001 and 30 from 2002 in service still. 199.79.168.209 (talk) 20:15, 9 September 2019 (UTC)
2019 XD60 Order
