Article improvement

[edit]

first "new build" ocean going cargo/passenger diesel ship:
Vulcanus was a tanker (http://www.webcitation.org/5uL1FD6SH).
Fram was a sailing ship retrofitted with an auxiliary diesel engine (http://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Diesel_engine).

following paragraph should be removed for defiling the article:
"However, this claim was significantly challenged in 1996. There are evidence to say that the engines of M/S Selandia was a first on numerous points, but she was clearly not the worlds dieseldriven ship, nor was she the world's first ocean going ship (as the Dutch 'Vulcanus beat her to it by two years). However, she was certainly the largest, and most advanced diesel driven ship at the time of her maiden voyage in January 1912.[2]"

Mjroots indicates he will be improving this article. While I don't subscribe to Miramar, I have two sources which will help:

  • Craig, Robin (1980). Steam Tramps and Cargo Liners 1850–1950. Vol. 5. London: National Maritime Museum/W.S.Cowell Ltd. for Her Majesty’s Stationery Office. pp. 16–17. ISBN 0-1129-0315-0. {{cite book}}: |work= ignored (help) This contains several useful quotes on the vessel's originality and importance.
  • Baker, W.A.; Tryckare, Tre (1965), The Engine Powered Vessel, New York: Grosset & Dunlap

MJ, if you want to do your edits, I can come by later and add information from these sources. You may wish to limit this article to the first vessel of the name, and therefore delete some of the material now at the end. Kablammo (talk) 20:32, 12 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Kablammo, I have the Steam Tramps book, which is what I was hoping to use to expand the article. Further info will be gleaned from Lloyd's registers via Plimsoll Ship Data. It's obvious that Miramar has been used as a source for some of the info here, but I can't be 100% sure what info has been used form that site, hence my post at the WP.
