He played in six tests and a few more ODIs, but during his stay, he was preferred over Nayan Mongia to don the gloves, such was his brilliance behind the stumps. In the 1999-2000 season, he played three Tests against New Zealand at home and three in Australia and did reasonably well with the bat and exceptionally well with the gloves, to the extent that he was given preference even after Mongia was fit. Nevertheless, his poor run with the bat in Australia resulted in his axing from the side. He continued to play in the Ranji Trophy for seven more seasons and led his team in what would be his last domestic season.
After his axing, he was exceptionally good with the bat, particularly in the 2002-03 season with 32 dismissals from 11 matches, and more notably with the bat, scoring 754 runs and making a strong case for himself. Nevertheless, it was clear that India had looked past him whilst trying to find the next wicketkeeper and continued to play in the Ranji circuit. In 2015, he was inducted into the panel of selectors, and he became the head of the South Zone, and by extension, head of the entire panel.
