Navigation
[edit]@Dushan Jugum: Hi, I have a copy of the book: Pathways of the Birds - the voyaging achievements of Māori and their Polynesian ancestors, by Andrew Crowe (2018). I will try to pick out some highlights about the knowledge of navigation and way-finding that enabled Polynesian people to spread across the vast areas of the Pacific in the 13th and 14th century. There may be other aspects of Mātauranga that I will pick up along the way. It will take me a few days.Marshelec (talk) 06:55, 9 August 2021 (UTC)
- Hi Marshelec. Just letting you this page is still top of my list of things to do. I just keep getting distracted by the real world, its almost an addiction at this point. When I have time (this weekend?!?) I will be on a drive to get it ready for main space ASAP, without some of the detail I dreamed of. Then Māori Science can be a redirected to it. - @Dushan Jugum: Hi, the draft has come along really well so far. Congratulations on what you have already achieved. A few things have distracted me as well. I have weekend activities to attend to, and an all day assignment on Monday, so it may still take me several more days to put the time into reviewing the book "Pathways of the Birds", but I am certain that there is good stuff there that would be worth including in the article.Marshelec (talk) 05:41, 13 August 2021 (UTC)
Intersection of human well-being and ecology?
[edit]This phrase is using the colloquial definition of ecology, ie pertaining to "eco-friendly", sustainable, or environmentalism. Mātauranga Māori has little resemblance to ecology as a quantitative scientific discipline founded on mathematics, statistics, and empirical observations. See the first paragraph of Wikipedia's own Ecology article; "Ecology is a branch of biology, and it is not synonymous with environmentalism.". — Preceding unsigned comment added by 155.247.134.188 (talk) 13:32, 11 October 2021 (UTC)
- Removed only mention of ecology, with comment "Removed sentence as ecology includes humans in it, therefore sentence is tautology and repeat of last sentence. ". Dushan Jugum (talk) 19:11, 11 October 2021 (UTC)

- Done.
- I would have thought it would be Kava (Piper methysticum, Kava Kava), which can cause liver damage, but it seems a lot of plants have similar names. --Hob Gadling (talk) 08:19, 1 January 2022 (UTC)
NY times article on conflict between Mātauranga & western science
[edit]A recent article from the NY Times describes the current conflict quite well and is a good source of information to those interested: Can Ancient Maori Knowledge Aid Science? June 1, 2022 It has been archived in The Internet Archive. LiPollis (talk) 03:20, 9 June 2022 (UTC)

[edit]I think this article's summary was well-written. I feel that I was able to understand the article just by reading the initial paragraphs. There are also several sources made within the last 5 years. Pandabackpack152 (talk) 03:02, 14 September 2024 (UTC)
