Not a civil war

[edit]

This was a war between independent city states so it should be moved back to War against Lyctus Dejvid (talk) 18:49, 16 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

War against Lyctus was only a very small episode of the entire war. As well it might be called War between Knossos and Polyrrhenia or whatever cities were involved. The scenario is all of Crete and this should be reflected in the name. Not a single city, as we could never name them all. This was also a civil war, as the events in Gortyn give proof. But maybe we could name it Cretan Cities War, if there is consensus?--Lamassus (talk) 22:29, 16 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Wars that involved Greek city states often resulted in civil strife in individual cities over which side to back. The strife in Gortyn is pretty typical of that but the page is on the war as a whole not the events withing Gortyn. We know too little of the Gortyn events for a Wikipedia page on that to be justified. Cretan Cities War as a tittle would be fine.Dejvid (talk) 09:43, 24 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, I'll wait a week or two for other opinions, and if nobody objects, I'll move it to Cretan Cities War. Thanks.--Lamassus (talk) 22:40, 25 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I've moved it to "Lyttian War", which is the common name in historiography. Even if it is not strictly accurate, that does not matter; such names usually are not, what is important is that they are established terms, which should be preferred to constructing our own neologisms. I have waited 3 1/2 weeks before moving this. You have done, without asking anyone, in 24 hours. You might have asked here before doing so.--Lamassus (talk) 22:01, 21 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Erm, that's not the way it works. The very principle Wikipedia is built upon is, if you see something wrong, fix it. "Cretan Cities War" is a clear neologism (and a pretty generic name that could apply to any war at all between Cretan city-states), while Lyttian War is the name used by historians. Knowing that, and providing a reference (I can provide many more if required), I corrected it per WP:BOLD. If you have reason to think that I was wrong, you can revert me and discuss here per WP:BRD, or initiate a WP:RM listing the options and arguments in favour of either side. BTW, simply waiting for someone to drop by is probably not going to result in any feedback. You should have notified relevant projects such as WP:WikiProject Classical Greece and Rome and WP:WikiProject Greece. Constantine 06:58, 22 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
