Name Origin

[edit]

I have found two histories for the town, I don't know how reliable they are. Both state the "-dyl" was added by the post office to differentiate it from Lynn, Utah. One says there is folklore that the Lynn came from "Lynn Mass" printed on a shoe. [1] [2] -Lөvөl 19:15, 10 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

The first one is taken verbatim from the book Utah Place Names by John W. Van Cott (ISBN 0-87480-345-4). That book uncritically repeats more legends than it should. The Millard County centennial history book doesn't address the issue of the name's source, just that it was originally "Lynn Junction". There is a book called Distant Whistles: The History of Lynndyl, Utah by Mary Gardner Greathouse; I haven't read it but imagine it might give more information.
