Allen Greer (1972) described the species groups based on morphological characters of the mouth area of the skull.

Initially there were only three;

the Egernia Group (containing the genera Egernia, Tiliqua, Corucia, and Tribolonotus)

the Eugongylus Group which is subdivided into the Eugongylus subgroup containing the genera Anotis [now called Nannoscincus], Cryptoblepharus, Emoia, Eugongylus, Leiolopisma, Morethia, Phoboscincus, Proablepharus, and Tachygia and the Lampropholis subgroup including the genera; Afroablepharus, Carlia, Cophoscincopus, Geomyersia, Lacertaspis, Lampropholis, Leptosiaphos, Menetia, Panaspis, and possibly Ristella

The Sphenomorphus Group containing the genera Ablepharus, Anomalopus, Ateuchosaurus, Ctenotus, Eremiascincus, Hemiergis, Isopachys, Lerista, Lipinia, Lobulia, Notoscincus, Prasinohaema, Scincella, Siaphos, Sphenomorphus, and Tropidophorus
