Request for plain English description
[edit]I am not a doctor. Neither a medical body. More over english is not my mother tongue. Can any one help me with an ordinary description about luteal phase and make grateful?
Chart needs to also show testosterone levels through the cycle

Luteal phase defect
[edit]Following copied from Talk:Luteal phase defect since Luteal phase defect redirects to this article. Meters (talk) 21:33, 25 July 2012 (UTC)
- why is pathology combined with a physiologic phenomenon? Whyis there not a seperate page on : Luteal phase defect? (41.210.129.3 (talk) 21:17, 24 July 2012 (UTC))
Behavioral Effects
[edit]This section is one-sided, myopic, and offensive. As a behavioral neuroendocrinologist, I deeply hope that this section is edited to make it impartial and that the new information is supported by empirical data. For example, this section would be better served by a description of the influence of gonadal hormones associated with the luteal phase and depression (also known premenstrual dysphoric disorder or late luteal phase dysphoric disorder). Holy inaccuracies, Batman. Sheesh.
Update and re-insertion of Behavioral Effects section
[edit]IIn the aforementioned section that was and will be in the article, it has been brought to my attention that it is outdated and not following WP:POV. I am in the process of working with other editors to flesh out this section and make it not only more presentable, but also accurate and verifiable. Please see the following sources that I will be referencing for the upcoming re-write. I ask that no one deletes the section again, unless discussed here with a consensus, or no improvements are made in a reasonable amount of time (7 days).[1][unreliable medical source][2][unreliable medical source][3][unreliable medical source]

- Hi @Jab843:. Thank you for posting your plans here. Per WP:MEDRS, please note that secondary sources (review articles) are typically needed to support medical claims. All the sources that you have listed above are primary. A large number of recent review articles have been published on the luteal phase (see for example this list), so it should be no problem to find suitable secondary sources to revise and expand this article. Edits to Luteal Phase Outline
[edit]As part of a UCSF SOM education Wikiediting course, DB and RVM will be making edits through August-September 30th, 2021. Here is our revision plan:
WORK PLAN/OUTLINE:
- Luteal phase introduction
- Should be a clear summary
- Should give good overview of most important aspects of the topic
- Mention that luteal phase occurs after ovulation, which is characterized by an increase in LH/FSH.
- Mention what a normal cycle is in terms of timeline/average length
- Add events in chronological order starting from 1st day of menses
Hormonal events
- Change language to include gender neutral language
- Mention 42 hours of estrogen and connection to LH surge: “The phenomenon of positive feedback allows the ovary to send a message (via estrogen) to the hypothalamus and pituitary that a preovulatory follicle is mature and ready to be launched for fertilization. The switch from negative to positive feedback appears to be triggered by exposure to high physiologic concentrations of estrogen for at least 42 hours”
- Simplify jargon
- Correct: luteal phase is fixed at 14 days while the follicular phase can vary.
SEPARATE: Ovarian Cycle from “Hormone Events”
ADD: Follicular events
- Mention how the endometrium transforms to a state receptive to blastocyst implantation and to maintain early pregnancy/pathology
ADD: Uterine events
- Include role of corpus luteum/progesterone
ADD: Changes with implantation (pregnancy)
REMOVE: Luteal phase defect
- This looks like a great, comprehensive plan. I agree that some language can be simplified. There seem to be a couple of primary literature sources that should be removed. Looking forward to seeing the additional sections on follicular events and uterine events.Bluemermaid21 (talk) 04:13, 17 September 2021 (UTC)
Peer Review
[edit]The updated luteal phase article has a solid introduction to the concept and does a great job separating the different phases of the menstrual cycle and clearly outlining the important yet other aspects of the luteal stage. The organization is easy to follow with the background information listed first and then the details of the hormonal events. As stated in your work plan, I agree that the luteal defects section does not belong on this page. In addition to removing the extensive material regarding basal body temperature and basal metabolic rate. Maybe consider adding more concrete details pertinent to the physiology and endocrinology of the luteal phase is more appropriate here. The graphic is a beautiful illustration of the different stages of the menstrual cycle. I am excited to see the final product! It is looking good so far Rainbowplants94 (talk) 04:24, 17 September 2021 (UTC)
