Opening heading
[edit]page should be renamed to "Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts" —Preceding unsigned comment added by 84.55.207.93 (talk) 22:49, 5 December 2010 (UTC)
Their new campus (School for Information Technology) in Rotkreuz ZG (Risch-Rotkreuz) should be added to the opening heading. https://www.hslu.ch/en/lucerne-school-of-information-technology/about-us/standort/ --213.55.241.4 (talk) 22:59, 20 February 2020 (UTC)

No consensus to move. Vegaswikian (talk) 06:34, 8 July 2011 (UTC)
Lucerne University of Applied Sciences → Lucerne_University_of_Applied_Sciences_and_Arts – would the the full correct name. Move if for consistency. relisting, see below Andrewa (talk) 07:19, 1 July 2011 (UTC) Uwolfer (talk) 08:52, 23 June 2011 (UTC)
- Do we have a source, independent of the institution, that calls this Hochschule a university at all? Septentrionalis PMAnderson 20:59, 23 June 2011 (UTC)
- Fachhochschule translated is university of applied science. So what else would you call it? I do not get the point of this question. --Uwolfer (talk) 17:21, 26 June 2011 (UTC)
- Oppose and relist to see whether any relevant evidence can be offered. And please read WP:AT (as suggested in many places during the process of raising an RM). If this is too much like heavy reading, WP:official names gives an informal treatment of the issues here (and it's probably bad news). Andrewa (talk) 07:24, 1 July 2011 (UTC)
- It's quite hard to find an "official" document (apart from their own stuff) which mentions the name in English. I have found it on an official website of Switzerland [1], but nothing else. I still think the page should be renamed to the requested name. If you don't get evidenced to do so... the redirection of the full name to this not complete one is already there... --Uwolfer (talk) 17:32, 1 July 2011 (UTC)
- Is it safe then to assume that you still haven't read either the Wikipedia policy on article titles or even the informal explanation of how it applies to such cases? It really would help. I'm afraid the decision will be based on the site policies, so simply repeating your personal preference is not terribly helpful. Andrewa (talk) 01:25, 2 July 2011 (UTC)

Merger proposal

Proposing that the contents of the stub Musikhochschule Luzern be merged into this article, as the music school seems to be a department of this institution. See this page. Deor (talk) 14:27, 14 November 2011 (UTC)
I have moved Musikhochschule Luzern to Hochschule Luzern – Musik based on the documented name change.
Whether the articles are merged or not, I think more historical information is needed. When did the name change? What else happened when the schools merged? At the school website there is an organizational chart implying a sharing of responsibilities among several cantonal governments, but no history. This applies to the current article no less than to the music school article.
FWIW I think "division" (not "department") is a better translation of the Franco-German word Departement. — ℜob C. alias ÀLAROB 02:14, 16 November 2011 (UTC)
- Note that the article in question has now been moved to Lucerne School of Music. (And I was using "department" in a general rather than a technical sense.) Deor (talk) 11:50, 18 November 2011 (UTC)
- OK. I requested the move to Lucerne School of Music because that is the common English name of the school, therefore the form we are asked to use to name Wikipedia articles. When I started the article as Musikhochschule Luzern, I could not find anything linking the German name to an English name. Since you pointed me to the new hslu.ch website, I have been able to make the connection to the English name (which has not changed).
- Although the music school article is a stub, I am inclined to think it should not be merged. This is not out of a sense of ownership, but because the music school (although much younger than a typical European conservatory) has a history distinct from that of the Hochschule Luzern, as well as associations with music festivals and the municipality of Lucerne. The association with the Hochschule Luzern is recent and, for all anyone knows, may not be long lasting. I think linking the two articles will be sufficient and will not inconvenience readers.
- It seems likely to me that users will search for the music school under its name more frequently than by searching for "Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts." Being redirected may confuse some users (not many, I admit) or lead them to think there has been an error, if they are unfamiliar with the Wikipedia interface. If the redirect is done, I think the music school and any other redirected divisions should be mentioned in the lead.
- Re "division": I could not find anything at hslu.ch that indicates how the school itself would translate the word Departement into English. Also checked leo.org without much success. I'm still in favor of "division" over "department," which has a specific meaning in English-speaking universities, but I'm not certain that "division" is the best translation.
- Finally, I have tried to find historical information about the schools merger, but have not been successful. The library databases I have access to do not give much coverage of the German press, and the English-language press, even music periodicals, have apparently failed to notice the merger. The school website doesn't even indicate what year it took place. I wish we had this information, as it would enhance both Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts and Lucerne School of Music. If anyone has access to German or French (or Italian?) periodical databases, a search on this topic could be very helpful.
- Sorry to run on for so long. — ℜob C. alias ÀLAROB 22:03, 18 November 2011 (UTC)
- Pro. It's no longer a school, but a "department" of the "Hochschule Luzern". -- Saemikneu (talk) 23:46, 11 February 2012 (UTC)
Opposed to merger for reasons stated above (music school's separate history; uncertain duration of merger; lack of spcific info about merger). Nothing has happened to this discussion since February 2012. Could we close it? — ℜob C. alias ÀLAROB 03:39, 12 May 2013 (UTC)
Lucerne School of Music
[edit]FYI, the above merger was done anyway, despite the lack of consensus. I have restored the article Lucerne School of Music with a rewrite to give more prominence to the Lucerne U. of A.S. & A. I hope this will be satisfactory. Both articles still lack specific historical information about mergers and status changes.
N.B. The English-language page for the "Departement" of Music at the L.U.A.S.&.A. still refers to the institution as the "Lucerne School of Music." — ℜob C. alias ALAROB 21:10, 11 August 2014 (UTC)
