LH heating has a high efficiency. The problems lie elsewhere, above all in the coupling to the plasma. The antennas must be very close to the plasma because the waves do not propagate in vacuum. Small changes in the distance cause large changes in the coupling, which result in reflections of power that can cause arcing in the waveguides and sources. It would be nice to have a section on these issues, but even nicer if a real expert wrote it. --Art Carlson 05:46, 28 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

A pop science article dated Jan 2011 describes computer simulations suggesting that Lower Hybrid Waves form naturally. It refers to a research paper entitled: Electron Current Drive by Fusion-Product-Excited Lower Hybrid Drift Instability published in Physical Review Letters by J. W. S. Cook, et al. This could reduce the engineering need to drive these waves into the plasma.

I think this paper should be cited but I am a new editor and don't know how to do that.Shannock9 (talk) 13:24, 14 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
