"dots"

[edit]

@Dan Holsinger: I see your restored the text: "Lowenstein without dots does not occur as a German name, it is due to the fact that English-speakers tend to just neglect them." I don't think this text belongs here because this is not something that is specific to the name Lowenstein. Also, it's not always true that the "oe" combination in German doesn't exist more generally, and it's not true in this case either. As mentioned in WP:Diacritic "Notice that even in German, combinations such as oe are used in some names rather than umlauts (as in Emmy Noether and, in modern German, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe)." So the substitution of "oe" for "ö" is not simply because "English-speakers tend to just neglect them." Finally, I'd like to point out that there are lots of German names with "ö", and they don't have text such as you included here. I don't think anyone would want all these pages to have a comment like this, do you?

Given the lack of response I'm going to delete the text. If there is disagreement, we can discuss. Coastside (talk) 03:21, 4 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
