VONORE, Tenn.(WVLT) -- It's a nightmare Tennessee State Trooper Lowell Russell continues to relive.
"A truck driver had fallen asleep and veered off the right shoulder of the road and struck the patrol car in the rear end", said Russell.
Lowell was given a second chance.
Revelation 3 talks about the keys and opening the door, it's a parallel that is inescapable
"If you see the cover of the book, the driver side door of the cruiser is standing open", said Chaplain Paul Grady.
Russell couldn't speak for days only write down questions about what happened.
His search for those answers led him to his car where he took these pictures.
Writing the book, "Trial by Fire" has also allowed Russell to come to grips with other tragic events in his life.
His mother and father have both passed away as did his best friend.
"Frankie meant so much to me", said Russell.
Lance Corporal Frankie Watson died in 2011 while fighting in Afghanistan.
Lowell was a mentor. No one's been allowed to see Frankie's room until now.
"This is exactly the way it is as though Frankie is still living here. The morning he got up and took a shower and left it the final time and exactly how he left it," said Russell.
Memories are scattered throughout the room. Watson's uniform still hangs in the closet along with his Sequoya high letter jacket.
Russell started a college scholarship in Watson's honor.
The multiple tragedies have also strengthened his own faith. Lowell was baptized in his local church.
Some might think they've been let down. For Russell,
"It's amazing, it's a miracle, by the grace of God."
Since the accident Lowell says he's forgiven Eric Lewis, who plowed into his with his semi. Lewis is now on supervised probation.
Lowell Russell still has hopes of wearing the uniform and getting back into a patrol car.

(WBIR - Monroe County) Sgt. Lowell Russell with the Tennessee Highway Patrol plasters the walls of his Monroe County home with portraits, photographs, and plaques from meaningful moments in his life.
"I love pictures. When my grandmother died, we were going through her things and found all of these old photo albums. We never saw those great pictures until after she died. I promised myself that would never happen in my house. I have pictures everywhere," said Russell. "I've had a lot of good times over the years. Each one of these pictures has some sort of special memory."
