== Source of the quote from A Midsummer Night's Dream

The actual quote is "The course of true love never did run smooth" and is said by Lysander in Act 1, Scene 1. The implication, one supposes, is that Teppei and Riko are like Lysander and Hermia in the play, fated not to be a match despite their love for one another.

Lysander: Ay me! for aught that I could ever read, Could ever hear by tale or history, The course of true love never did run smooth; But either it was different in blood— Hermia: O cross! too high to be enthrall'd to low. Lysander: Or else misgraffèd in respect of years— Hermia: O spite! too old to be engag'd to young. Lysander: Or else it stood upon the choice of friends— Hermia: O hell! to choose love by another's eyes.

Lysander is saying that either lovers are different in social class ('blood'), or age, or their friends are against it. Hermia agrees with each of these points in turn. 89.150.143.66 (talk) 19:31, 29 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Indeed this is a good analysis. The salient word in the quote is 'true'. It is not saying simply that love has its ups and downs - that hardly bears remarking upon. But 'true' love, according to this passage, is not "chosen by by another's eyes" - in other words, not chosen by first considering the most suitable partner in terms age, social class, etc. Thus difficulties are bound to arise. 猫に小判 09:23, 22 June 2022 (UTC)
