Manual of Style/pipelinks/ludicrous edit war

The Manual of Style's guidelines vis-a-vis pipelinks are just that - guidelines - and is an interpretation of pipelinking really worth this kind of battle-to-the-death? There's a Wikipedia-space page somewhere for craziest/most useless edit wars (at least, there used to be) and this one probably belongs on it. C'mon, folks.
