What part was J.T. Walsh supposed to play?

Was J.T. Walsh hired to play Grimmer or Weskit? According to the AFI Catalog of Feature Films, the First 100 Years 1893-1993, which relies heavily on contemporaneous accounts in Daily Variety, The Hollywood Reporter, and the LA Times, Walsh was hired to play Weskit.
