Long-tail applied to infectious diseases including Covid-19

I have seen news articles using the term 'long-tail' to speak about long-term recurring symptoms of Covid-19 in some number of recovering patients. I'd never seen the term 'long-tail' before, and the news articles don't seem to explain the term at all. I'm not sure how to add this information to this wiki article.
Here are some articles which mention 'long-tail' in an infectious disease context:
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6863629/ (section 2,"Rare disease as a long-tailed problem")
