I found the following data on his CV here

Lloyd G. Cross was born in Flint, Mich., on October 7, 1934.

received the B.S. degree in physics in 1957 and the M.S. degree in 1960,

From 1956 to 1958 he was an assistant in research at Willow Run Laboratories, the Univer- L. G. CROSS sity of Michigan, working in the field of infrared physics.

In 1958 he transferred to the Solid State Physics Group of the same laboratory, and began work on masers.

He was the a research associate at Willow Run Laboratories
