I see that, too. This...wow blew my mind. Ok, I'm willing to work on a table. It'd be as simple as
Old Name New Name Year of Change

E

[edit]
Elon College Elon University 2001

M

[edit]
Mary Washington College University of Mary Washington 2004

{| class=wikitable |- !Old Name !New Name !Year of Change |- !colspan=3| ===E=== |- |Elon College |[[Elon University]] |align="center" |2001 |- !colspan=3| ===M=== |- |Mary Washington College |[[University of Mary Washington]] |align="center" |2001 |}

Or we could do new name first then old name. Yes? I'll start this tonight if I hear an approval. --MPD01605 02:38, 1 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Agree - Hey,MPD01605, I think this is a great idea, but i'd like to see it categorized by new name, because people are more likely to search for the new name, or at least have knowledge of the new name when searching for the old. But not neessarily vice versa. No? --Shawn 02:54, 1 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, I thought of that after I originally made the table, and figured the idea was there. So, 2-0 of 2 contributing users is consensus. Sounds good! --MPD01605 04:07, 1 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Have fun with this one. Here's RIT's history when you get to the Rs :) [1] ccwaters 22:44, 5 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Template for each entry

[edit]

I believe that each college should be an entry. We would then have a list of colleges without any of the nasty align="center" going on for each entry.

{{college name change entry|Alcorn State University|Alcorn Agricultural and Mechanical College|1974}}

Tidying up tables

[edit]

Does anyone know how to fix the tables so they are all the same width? Ladybirdintheuk 13:33, 18 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, just merge the tables like i did. When you start a new letter, don't end the previous table, just separate it |- and begin colspan=3, then continue like you did. then they all merge together. --MPD01605 (T / C) 16:38, 18 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks - I knew there must be a way to do it, but I haven't got my head around wiki tables yet.

Full names

[edit]

It seems a little incongruous to me that an article listing name changes doesn't actually use the official names of the institutions in question (e.g. Fresno State) or doesn't even use the common nicknames (e.g. Dist. of Columbia). If there wasn't a strong reason for doing so, I'm going to go through and try to fix the entries for the current names. -choster 13:55, 6 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'm having a grand old time wasting minutes of my precious life fixing names to their full versions and properly alphabetizing this thing. Marionbutts (talk) 06:42, 6 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Add to list

[edit]

Westfield, Ma - Westfield State University (Changed to WSU Oct. 2010) has had several name changes over the years, beginning as Westfield Normal School in 1839 and then becoming Westfield State Teachers College in the 1930s (“Shortened” to Westfield State College). —Preceding unsigned comment added by 96.33.161.68 (talk) 16:20, 13 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
