The places in brackets

[edit]

What is the significance of the places in brackets? Campuses perhaps, but if so, they are incomplete. But then, do we really want to list every campus here? In any event, there should be a note that says what they are - once it has been decided. Nurg 04:21, 26 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Criteria for inclusion

[edit]

At present, this list appears to include many tertiary institutions which probably do not match the usual understanding of what is a university. Our article university says that a university provides both undergraduate and postgraduate education, but doesn't explicitly say in the lede that postgrad degrees are required. It says later that the term was "once reserved for research doctorate-granting institutions", which is closer to my understanding.

I believe in New Zealand that only the eight institutions listed in the first table in the article are entitled to call themselves universities. Unitec New Zealand does offer doctoral degrees but is not allowed to call itself a university on the grounds that it 'did not meet key academic criteria of "advanced learning and the development of intellectual independence, nor the criteria for international standards of research and teaching"'.

Should we trim the list to the eight institutions, plus historical notes about the University of New Zealand and the attempts by Unitec to gain university status, or should we rename the list to "List of tertiary institutions in New Zealand"?-gadfium 18:29, 13 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I added the others after seeing other higher education institutions had been included in List of universities in Australia, but on closer inspection most of the TAFEs aren't listed there. I think maybe trim others is the better option, the Polytechnics are listed at State sector organisations in New Zealand#Polytechnics and institutes of technology. Terminology use in the lead section

[edit]

I noticed that the lead section uses the word "federal" to refer to the University of New Zealand. I believe that this terminology is inappropriate as New Zealand uses a centralised rather than federalised system of government. As a result, we say that something exists at a "national" level rather than a "federal" level. MangoMan11 (talk) 05:35, 17 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Corrections/clarifications for page

[edit]

Due to COI, I can't add these myself.

In faculties & colleges:

  • AUT has sciences spread over both Health & Environmental Sciences and Design & Creative Technologies (specifically maths, stats, astronomy, computer science, physics)
  • AUT has a School of Education in Faculty of Culture & Society
  • AUT's Faculty of Māori & Indigenous Development is called Te Ara Poutama. The te reo Māori name predated the English translation so should be included.
  • UOA also does engineering in the Auckland Bioengineering Institute (ABI) which is separate from the Faculty of Engineering. Simialrly, medical research in the Liggins Institute. These institutes are managed by the university at the same level as faculties.

Also, just wondering whether schools within faculties (e.g. School of Medicine) should be listed at their school level or at the level of the faculty they are a part of (i.e. Faculty of Medical & Health Sciences) since they don't operate outside of that system.
