Notable?

In the past a similar list was deleted. I think however that the list is notable as punctuation marks/typographical symbols are discussed collectively in serious publications.

Can someone please add the actual symbols, next to each word? Thank you!

It would really be a big help to users of this encyclopedia. Sorry I don't have time to do it myself, at the moment. Thank you! Wtf2wtf (talk) 03:37, 23 April 2020 (UTC)

Would you mind explaining what you mean by the actual symbol next to each word, I do apologize for not perceiving, understanding, conceiving, or perhaps knowing what do you or are you actually denoting to or towards. it would be great of you to elaborate and clarify further on such confusion. I thank You in Advance. Mohammad Issam Aziz Boulad 113.210.53.172 (talk) 03:39, 27 April 2024 (UTC)
I have made a start. It is going to be time consuming so I want to check that there are no concerns about this approach before I continue. (I started a column for Unicode but rapidly concluded that it introduces a need for precision that is best left to the relevant articles when it is complicated (as it often is).

Do we really need the citations? --John Maynard Friedman (talk) 17:13, 23 April 2020 (UTC)

I don't believe we do, they don't add any value, so I have discarded. --John Maynard Friedman (talk) 22:31, 24 April 2020 (UTC)

Looks good to me except last column probably should be "also known as". I don't think the average person distinguishes between punctuation and symbols. I'd put the currency symbols in here too. Alphabetical order helps a lot. I think the navbox should also be changed back to alphabetic order (and the link added to the bottom somebody added to get an alphabetical list removed).Spitzak (talk) 20:42, 25 April 2020 (UTC)

@Spitzak: Thanks, not sure how I missed your reply until now. I disagree though about the infobox: I think it is useful to group items thematically so that if you know approximately what you want, your search is narrowed down. Alphanumeric sort order is fine if you already know what the name of the glyph – but in that case why do you need the infobox? I added the link to this article in the infobox so that people who want a alphanumeric order list have quick access to it.
I started with 'also known as' but fairly rapidly found it too limiting and decided that a broader thesaurus-style 'similar concepts' category would be both more useful and more flexible. Of course you could add an 'also known as', though the only case I can think of is apostrophe/closing single quotation/prime/foot/second of arc?--John Maynard Friedman (talk) 14:41, 30 April 2020 (UTC)
  • I am developing this table on my sandbox. If anyone wants to help out, feel free. Just leave am "I'm starting" and then an "I've finished for now" at my talk page to avoid edit conflicts. --John Maynard Friedman (talk) 12:30, 2 May 2020 (UTC)

Done!

I have replaced the list with a table that include the symbols, as requested above. Wtf2wtf, Spitzak, please check for errors and omissions. --John Maynard Friedman (talk) 16:25, 4 May 2020 (UTC)

Page was broken

I'm not sure where to report vandalism on wikipedia, I just happened to be looking for a symbol and saw this page was broken and undid the edit that broke everything.. um.. so I guess that's all? Crow653 (talk) 03:08, 25 October 2021 (UTC)

@Crow653: Thank you for repairing the damage. I'm afraid that low-level juvenile behaviour is just something we have to accept as the price of having an open system that anybody can edit. Most contributions are worth having; making pre-registration mandatory has been discussed but remains dismissed. You can really only do what you did, which is to revert and move on. If there is a persistent attack, you can use Wikipedia:Requests for page protection or, as a last resort, request Administrator intervention: WP:AIV. --John Maynard Friedman (talk) 10:46, 25 October 2021 (UTC)
Thanks for the response, I'm familiar with other wikis and vandalism like this, just unfamiliar with wikipedia specifically and from what I know it's a lot more formal here, so I wanted to leave a talk page message in case it needed more explanation than the edit summary. And thanks for the info, I'll make sure to report there if I see anything more substantial. :) Crow653 (talk) 23:29, 25 October 2021 (UTC)

Backslash

Can someone fix this: It says / is a backslash, which is incorrect. This \ is a backslash; this / is a slash or forward slash. Basically, / is used when writing (think of the W in writing the the W in forward); \ is used in computers. This information can be found on many reliable sources on the internet. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.62.140.130 (talk) 05:18, 2 November 2021 (UTC)

Not done The row beginning / says immediately that the symbol is a slash (and likewise the row beginning \ says backslash). Please note the heading at the top of each column. --John Maynard Friedman (talk) 08:39, 2 November 2021 (UTC)

Fleuron

There is a proposal at talk:Fleuron (typography)#Move to specific aldus leaf, create general fleuron (typography) to split the article. Other voices are welcome. --John Maynard Friedman (talk) 19:43, 8 February 2022 (UTC)
