I returned firefox and thunderbird since i don’t see why they should not be called open source. -- Anomen 11:11, 3 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It's because they contain image files which are licensed under a strict copyright license. See this page or [1] for background. MarkPilgrim 17:42, 18 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Contested, self-serving opinion. I recommend you read the NPOV policy. Johannhuhta 08:48, 19 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Limit to registered trademarks?

[edit]

As I see it, this page is either incredibly impossibly incomplete, or outside its original scope. Trademarks can either be common law (unregistered), or registered within the country's appropriate intellectual property body. Therefore nearly all open source software names are covered under common law. (I just made a Hello World program and released it as "Mega HW Ocelot Enterprise™". This is now a trademarked open source software.)

As there are better lists in Wikipedia for open source software, I think this page should be limited to open source software trademarks that are registered with a country's IP body (USPTO in the US, for example). Also, I'd like to make a push to find other registered open source trademarks, since I'm sure there are a lot more. Debian, for example, is USPTO 2301362, which I will add to the list after I'm done with this comment. --Fo0bar (talk) 23:40, 3 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hello User:Fo0bar - I agree, it makes sense to limit the list to registered open source trademarks, and they may need to be organized by country/jurisdiction. I added a few more registered marks that I found by searching the USPTO's TESS for marks owned by open source software umbrella groups: Free Software Foundation, Software Freedom Conservancy, Software in the Public Interest, and others.
