Service notability

I just reverted a significant number of edits from an anonymous user who removed most of the listings and pared it down to (basically) a list of the main American-based streaming services (only some of which currently operate internationally). I've reverted for now but it's probably time to consider how broad this list should actually be.

My viewpoint on this, for whatever it's worth, is dividing the list into a few buckets roughly based on the following (likely with some sort of minimum verifiable number of subscribers, e.g. 1 million):

  • Global cross-genre: Operating worldwide (or in most major countries) with a wide variety of entertainment programs from multiple genres and production locations and at least 10 million subscribers (I would consider this to include at least Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+, and likely also Apple TV+ and YouTube Premium)
  • Multi-country cross-genre: Has a market presence similar to the above but only operating in a few countries (and proportionate minimum subscriber count) (Hulu, CBS All Access, Iflix, arguably HBO depending on how you count the different over-the-top versions of HBO Max/Go/Now in the U.S., Asia, Europe, etc.)
  • Country-specific cross-genre: Has a market presence similar to the above but only in a single major country (and, again, proportionate minimum subscriber count) (Crave, Peacock, Stan)
  • Genre-specific: Focused on a specific type of programming, e.g. sports or anime; may be single-country or international (e.g. Crunchyroll, DAZN, ESPN+)
  • Regional programming: Focused on programming across multiple genres but only from a specific country or region (e.g. Britbox, Showmax, maybe IWant/TFC?).

Just a starting point. — stickguy (:^›)— || talk || 21:48, 3 August 2020 (UTC)

Renaming the article

− − IMO, we should rename this to "Subscription Video-on-demand service" to avoid confusion. Piulin (talk) 14:40, 30 October 2020 (UTC)

Propose of merger with Video on demand and outsourcing of the list

@Fanoflionking: The list should be in a separate list article named List of notable streaming services by paid subscribers (for example) while the article's other content should be merged with Video on demand#Subscription models and the title should redirect to Video on demand itself. Piulin (talk) 11:03, 5 November 2020 (UTC)

I like it the way it is it has the information we need plus an intro explaining what a Streaming service provider is. Fan Of Lion King 🦁 (talk) 11:22, 5 November 2020 (UTC)
@Fanoflionking: And why not renaming it to Subscription streaming service to avoid confusion considering ad-supported streaming services are also a Streaming service providers. Piulin (talk) 21:55, 5 November 2020 (UTC)

I think it is ok as it is maybe if we get another opinion. Fan Of Lion King 🦁 (talk) 11:21, 6 November 2020 (UTC)

HBO max

HBO Max just reached 61 millions subscribers worldwide but I don't know how to update the data, here is the source https://investors.att.com/~/media/Files/A/ATT-IR/financial-reports/quarterly-earnings/2020/q4-2020/ATT4Q20EarningsRelease.pdf . — Preceding unsigned comment added by Fransebas (talkcontribs) 16:01, 27 January 2021 (UTC)

That number includes all [including international] HBO subscribers as well, who [only the ones in the US] get HBO Max for free. Actual people using HBO Max are 17.2 million. Piulin (talk) 09:31, 30 January 2021 (UTC)

Mentioning of Cloud Gaming

Cloud gaming is a form of streaming media. Doremon764 (talk) 17:08, 29 August 2021 (UTC)

Apple TV+ subscriber numbers

Does anyone have a decent, current source on this? I ask because the number that's currently cited appears to be a US-only estimate from early 2020, and that number apparently included a lot of people getting a free trial. Now, with https://www.cnbc.com/2021/09/24/apple-told-a-showbiz-union-it-had-less-than-20-million-tv-subscribers.html coming out, it seems that the US/Canada subscriber number is under 20 million currently, but that wouldn't include subscribers from any other country. --Mario777Zelda (talk) 20:37, 25 September 2021 (UTC)

iQIYI subscriber number

Hi, why is iQIYI subscriber number listed in table as "103.6 million", when in archived source link is stated "The number of total subscribing members was 118.9 million as of March 31, 2020, 99.2% of whom were paying subscribing members." https://web.archive.org/web/20201108223411/https://traderscommunity.com/index.php/stocks/earnings-reports/2069-iqiyi-subscriber-base-grows So shouldnt be number in the table updated to "118.9 million"? Thx much --94.113.198.208 (talk) 13:10, 17 May 2022 (UTC)

NBC, CBS, ABC are NOT "Free"?

At least one of these explicity states on the home page that plans start at $4.99/month, and another requires you to link to your TV provider. As a potential user, I wouldn't regard any of these as "Free". 2601:8A:C180:70:1D3:CFD:8962:3F91 (talk) 05:58, 5 October 2022 (UTC)
