Remark about US in the introduction
What's up with the remark "Such attacks are extremely rare in the United States" in the introduction? Maybe it's just that I don't understand something, but attacks on random strangers happen very often in the US (like the Isla Vista mass murder), don't they. If there's something about these Chinese school attacks that are different from Aurora shooting, Isla Vista etc, then it must be specified. And second, even if it is true that such attacks are rare in the US, why does it have to be mentioned? The article is about China after all. Hope that somebody can explain it to me, thanx!
The School Shootings are common in US, the School stabbings, and mass stabbings in general are not common Kelsykelsykarter2 (talk) 02:58, 19 January 2023 (UTC)
Help wanted
This article needs a lot of help and re-writing. Will work on it soon. Suomi Finland 2009 (talk) 16:54, 3 May 2010 (UTC)
Nanping school stabbings
I have suggested a merger between the Nanping school stabbings and this article. The reason being as follows:
- The motive of the latter two school attacks seem intricately linked to the first one as a copycat crime.
- Media analysis, domestic and foreign, have focused on the issue as a whole; the idea that people go into elementary schools and kill the young is the topical area of this article, not a single incident.
- It is simply more practical for a reader to read about all these incidents in one go, and easier for editors to contextualize and understand the situation.
With that, I'd like to ask other editors' support on this issue. Colipon+(Talk) 01:37, 17 May 2010 (UTC)
- Chinese media seems to suggest the attacks are all copycat crimes. It seems to be the sensible way of building the subject into proper encyclopaedic entries. Ohconfucius ¡digame! 05:04, 17 May 2010 (UTC)
- Opposed The Nanping school stabbing seems a notabale event by itself, so you might think it merits its own article, no matter for how long these attacks will continue to happen. Especially in the face of all those articles about American school shootings with a lot less victims than in Nanping I find it rather strange that someone sees a necessity to merge it with this article. And the argument that all the attacks following the stabbings in Nanping are copycat crimes is totally irrelevant, because it says nothing about their notability. e.g. the Queen Street massacre, and the Hungerford massacre were basically copying the Hoddle Street massacre, nonetheless each of these shootings is notable by itself and therefore warrants its own article. Same goes for the many Columbine copycats which should, according to the logic used in the comment above, be merged into the article about the Columbine high school massacre, which is obviously totally unreasonable. - My approach to stub articles is to start building up at least one encyclopaedic article to a decent size before splitting. If someone wants to develop the Nanping school stabbings article into a 30kb article within the next week, then please be my guest. However, to leave it to vegetate in its current state indefinitely - like many articles about minor (but notable) incidents in China - seems to me like a rotten idea. Part of the problem is certainly cultural bias, but press coverage for societal harmony plays its part. In any event, it's much more significant that the Chinese press are ALL talking about the common roots of all these crimes, and the impact of them on the whole society. So it makes plenty of sense for there to be just one article for the time being. Ohconfucius ¡digame! 15:52, 20 May 2010 (UTC)
I changed the title to Nanping school massacre to reflect the Chinese name better. That article has its own page on Chinese Wikipedia, so it stays. Heroeswithmetaphors (talk) 19:36, 23 May 2010 (UTC)
Chenpeng attack
Does this qualify as part of this series of copycat crimes? 96.241.150.64 (talk) 20:03, 14 December 2012 (UTC)
- I've created Chenpeng Village Primary School stabbing to collate information about this event. John Vandenberg (chat) 03:01, 15 December 2012 (UTC)
- There are a lot of sources that link the Chenpeng stabbing to the Nanchang event in February 2012 and earlier attacks (However I believe the English sources all contain a significant error - see Talk:Chenpeng Village Primary School stabbing#Nanchang - August). --John Vandenberg (chat) 04:18, 17 December 2012 (UTC)
