Term
[edit]'Mental asylums' is a really really incorrect term. From 1950s on they were called Psychiatric Hospitals or Mental Health treatment centres. This is to do with destigmatising mental health for the benefit of the patient. The Laceweb site online (I woked with its founder) will give a run down of modern mental health practice.
Using termonology such as is used here is archaic and abusive to people who may be unwell. No one would do that to a person with appendicitis, would they. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 203.54.9.129 (talk • contribs)
For NSW add:
Kenmore Peat and Milson Rydalmere North Ryde Gladesville Parramatta
Darlinghurst was still operating in the 1920s and later.
The phrasing for Wolston Park in Queensland is pretty crook. There are children who are patients there so you are potentially presenting stuff in a light that may hurt them. There was also a hospital at Toowoomba.
For Victoria add:
Royal Park, Mont Park, Kew, Kew Cottages, Larundel, Ararat, Sunbury.
There were more.
Read Laceweb and you may have a kinder heart and approach termonology re health issues, more appropriately. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 203.54.9.129 (talk • contribs)
Asylums vs psychiatric units
[edit]The term "mental asylums", while archaic, is still a correct term and appropriate in this case. This page is mostly a list of the old, closed or decommissioned lunatic asylums or hospitals for the insane. There are a couple of currently-operating psychiatric units listed on this page - perhaps these should be removed as they aren't 'asylums' and don't fit with the general theme. Bloomfield
[edit]Bloomfield's still operational, they've just modernized it. A lot of those places in the article have closed down though and are there for heritage purposes, that I agree with. Patients go to the MHICU unit (Mental Health Intensive Care Unit) then step down into Adult Acute and eventually transition to Manara (men's rehab), Turon (women's rehab), Amaroo (more relaxed and open ward for patients about to leave), Windamere (forensic unit), there's a couple others but I can't really remember off the top of my head. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 159.196.123.22 (talk) 10:09, 22 December 2021 (UTC)
