This is list of identified non-portmanteaus that have been excluded from List_of_portmanteaus:

  • alphabet from alpha and beta - is an adoption from Greek, and the Greek word was not a portmanteau
  • Britcom from British and comedy, by analogy with sitcom (see below) - dubious: combines initial syllables
  • Compaq from computer, pack, and compact (to denote a small integral object) - stretches definition of a portmanteau
  • Debian from founder Ian Murdock and his wife Debra - does not conform to definition of a portmanteau: combines initial syllables
  • Edexcel from educational and excellence - does not conform to definition of a portmanteau: combines initial syllables
  • freeware from free and software - just "free" + "-ware", by analogy with "software"; the same goes for "wetware", "shareware", etc.
  • Javanoid from Java and Arkanoid is a free Java-base web game.
  • knowledgebase from knowledge and database - just "knowledge" + "base", in the same way that "database" is "data" + "base"
  • Limon from lime + lemon - this is an english bastardization of the Spanish word for lemon (which is limón), not a portmanteau.
  • shareware from share and software - see "freeware" above
  • soundscape from sound and landscape - comes from "sound" + "-scape" suffix
  • squiggle from squirm and wiggle - dubious etymology
  • sitcom from situation and comedy - dubious: combines initial syllables
  • sysop from system and operator - dubious; combines initial syllables
  • terrist from Terra and terrorist - merely "Terra" + "-ist", by analogy with "terrorist"
