Should Eminem and other rappers be listed as visual artists?

[edit]

This list has some rappers like Eminem listed twice, both incorrectly under the category of "artists and artisans" with visual artists like painters and sculptors, and also correctly under the category of "Musicians, bands and composers." I have corrected this error twice, by removing Eminem and other rappers from the visual artist section, but another editor (John from Idegon) has insisted twice that Eminem and several other rappers need to be listed in both sections. So, let's have a discussion on whether Eminem and other rappers should be listed twice, including with visual artists like painters and sculptors, or whether they should only be listed once, with others in the music industry. And, if you believe these rappers are primarily visual artists, please cite your sources. Thanks, Leela872 (talk) 16:53, 19 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

It is now April 26, so it has been one week since "John from Idegon" instructed me to "post on the article's talk page saying why you think it should be re ordered. If no one disagrees after a week or so, then go ahead and reorder the article ... changing the layout of an established article requires consensus, which you do not have." Since then, no one has expressed any disagreement with this change beyond John from Idegon. "Funcrunch" responded in the "Teahouse" forum that they thought my "edits to List of people from Detroit were reasonable." And "Theroadislong" has also attempted to make this change, saying in their edit summary that "these [rappers] are already listed below under musicians and they are not visual artists." This is in agreement with my edit that I summarized as "Eminem and other rappers are not a visual artists. They are music artists, and listed below under 'Musicians, bands and composers.'" So, it seems to me that Funcrunch, Theroadislong, and I all believe this to be a reasonable change. Only John from Idegon has disputed this change, however John from Idegon has not provided any information to support their belief that rappers Eminem, Big Sean, Royce da 5'9", Dej Loaf, and Danny Brown all should be listed as having both music careers as well as visual arts careers. So, unless John from Idegon or anyone else has any further argument they'd like to make toward continuing to block my editing of this list to make these changes, since "no one disagrees after a week or so," then I am now going to "go ahead and reorder the article." Are astronauts visual artists?

[edit]

Similar to the above, there is an astronaut listed in the artist/artisan section, with the category "astronauts" oddly placed between "ceramists" and "photographers". I don't think of astronauts as visual artists, so I tried to put that astronaut in a different section, just for astronauts. Unfortunately another editor disagrees, and has changed this twice, apparently insisting that this astronaut is a visual artist. Please cite your sources for this. Thanks, Leela872 (talk) 16:49, 19 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Should the entries on this list be in alphabetical order? What is alphabetical order?

[edit]

There are several instances on this list of people being listed out of alphabetical order. I have attempted to start correcting this; however, another editor (again, John from Idegon) is apparently insisting on some other order other than standard English alphabetical order. For example, I believe Anita Baker should be listed between Bad Meets Evil and before Florence Ballard (in alphabetical order as Bad, Baker, Ballard), Unfortunately the other editor is insisting that Anita Baker be listed between Anybody Killa and Dorothy Ashby. That order (Anybody, Baker, Ashby) seems like incorrect alphabetical order to me, but since the order of letters in the alphabet is apparently being disputed, let's see if we can have a larger group discussion about this. Similarly, I believe Anita Cochran should be listed between The Clark Sisters and Alice Coltrane (my understanding of the alphabet leads to Clark, Cochran, Coltrane). Unfortunately the other editor is insisting that Anita Cochran be listed between Bliss 66 and Brainstorm. That order (Bliss, Cochran, Brainstorm) does not seem alphabetical to me, but since this has been disputed twice, I'm looking for input from other editors who may also have some views on how to correctly list names based on the order of letters in the alphabet. Thanks, Leela872 (talk) 16:53, 19 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Consistency

[edit]

After reading this page, it appears that there are many inconsistencies in regards to people that appear here as well as those that do not. For example, while Isiah Thomas did live in the Metro Detroit area for over a decade while he played for the Detroit Pistons, he was born and raised in Illinois. After retiring from pro basketball, he has lived in Toronto, Indiana, and New York. However, other notable basketball players that are actually from the Metro Detroit area originally do not appear in this list. Grant Long is one such example. He is from Wayne, graduated from high school in Romulus, attended college in Ypsilanti, played for the Pistons for two years, and currently lives in metro Detroit as he is employed by the Fox Sports Detroit network. So, I would call Grant Long more of a Detroiter than Isiah Thomas. I guess my question is, if I could get some consensus from other editors, what should the criteria be? If we are simply going to put someone on this page because they played for a Detroit sports team for years, even though they have no origins to the area, then we will find ourselves with a HUGE page, as between the Lions, Tigers, Pistons, and Red Wings, we would have well over 100 athletes living in the metro area during a given year. Multiply that by how many years these franchises have existed and we have a real problem on our hands, as players come and go every single season. Do we make a 10-year rule? Where an athlete is added to this list when they have been with a team for ten years (long enough to establish "wiki list residency")? I personally am in favor of ONLY including locals on this page. People that were either physically born in the area, spent at least several years of their childhood here, or have spent a majority of their adult life here (such as someone that moved to Detroit at age 20, is now 50, and has remained ever since). Even though I cited athletes as my examples for inconsistency, there are plenty of others in the rest of the sections. So, any input is appreciated. --HsxericMy Talk 00:15, 15 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Kudos

[edit]

This is one of the only "list of people from X" lists that's well sourced. Kudos to those of you who have been so fastidious. That's all. :) — Rhododendrites talk \\ 01:57, 3 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
