[edit]- I have added and removed some entries according to my understanding of the matter which is that breads, doughnuts and cakes are not pastries unless they actually involve some pastry. And the pastries may be savoury as well as sweet, e.g. the Cornish pasty or samosa. Warden (talk) 17:37, 4 May 2012 (UTC)
- The article has been significantly expanded and improved, and could use more work to populate its new table with text and images. Northamerica1000(talk) 08:48, 6 May 2012 (UTC)

Lede image
[edit]Either blow the current one up, or pick an emblematic single item. The current image seems hard to see what one's looking at. Just my two cents. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 12:46, 17 May 2012 (UTC)
Or get rid of the image entirely. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 17:26, 19 May 2012 (UTC)

Apple pie
[edit]I was wondering whether we should apple pie to this list, as the List of cakes has apple cake but not apple pie. ACEOREVIVED (talk) 14:35, 4 February 2013 (UTC)
- I would have to say that apple pie goes in the list of pies article because it's a pie, and not a pastry. :) If it were named apple pastry, then that would be a whooolllllleeeeeee differnt story. :) :) :) Anna Frodesiak (talk) 15:54, 4 February 2013 (UTC)
Pies are a subcategory of pastry, so all pies are also pastries. I wonder if it wouldn't be better to add "pie" as a single entry to the list, however, with links to that article, rather than to include every one of the thousands of types of pies to the list. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2602:306:C4CE:9AF9:E5F0:BA0:F848:7B8C (talk) 02:31, 21 November 2023 (UTC)
OK I take your point - I did not know that there was an article called List_of_pies,_tarts_and_flans! ACEOREVIVED (talk) 00:03, 5 February 2013 (UTC)
- Really? You're all over that talk page. :) Anna Frodesiak (talk) 03:17, 5 February 2013 (UTC)
Unresolved issues in table
[edit]Whew! I've just made a sweep through the table, checking each item lacking a photo. I've brought over a photo "for the table" when the Wikilinked article had one, and put in a {{Image requested}} for the ones lacking a photo. This flags the articles for editors who find and add photos, and some of the gaps have already been filled, thanks to User:Glane23. I've also tidied up various details as I noticed them, and added {{Talk header}} notes to WP:TALK pages as needed. I've noticed some anomalies I couldn't resolve immediately, so I'm listing them here in hopes that other editors can figure them out:
- Apple pie - It seems clear that this should be consolidated with List of pies, tarts and flans and removed from this article
- Chorley cake / Eccles cake / Sad cake - There seems to be a lot of overlap and redundancy here; I leave it to more knowledgeable editors to work on this
- Croline - There is some question on Talk:Croline about whether this is a real food
- Gunjiya - Article doesn't exist yet, even in stub form
- Ladies' navels - Description refers to other Turkish pastries not yet covered
- Reuzenbol - There is some question on Talk: Reuzenbol about whether this is a real food
- Rhubarb tart - It seems clear that this should be consolidated with List of pies, tarts and flans and removed from this article
- Toast'em Pop Ups - This points to a rather promotional article (without a photo), which needs to be either Wikified or deleted
- Zlebia - This is just a pointer to the article Jalebi, which already has its own entry in the table here
The above list is just what I happened to notice on this sweep, and I'm sure there are other issues I've missed. Cheers! Reify-tech (talk) 16:07, 12 November 2013 (UTC)
tiramisu
[edit]Why not tiramisu?
Sorting of Wikitable has been effectively broken
[edit]Since the last time I looked carefully, somebody has broken up the Wikitable into 26 sub-pieces. Unfortunately, this effectively breaks the ability to sort the complete table by different columns, which can be quite useful for editors and for readers as well. For example, clicking on the "Origin" column allowed me to find and clean up multiple inconsistencies and problems with entries in this column (e.g. UK vs. United Kingdom; City, Country vs Country, City; inconsistent formatting, etc.). As a further example of sorting functionality, clicking on "Origin" and then "Name" sorts the table by place of origin and then by name within each group. This is a very powerful way to have the computer help organize large multi-column lists, and can reveal all sorts of interesting patterns and relationships, allowing readers and editors to discover articles they did not know were related.
The whole point of this "List" article is to allow a broad overview of the topic not visible in the individual articles, and to allow overall patterns to become visible and discoverable. Breaking the Wikitable sortability negates one of the chief reasons to have this survey List article in the first place. Also, I am concerned about possible spread of this breakage into other List articles with Wikitables which have even more columns and functionality, which would be an even greater loss of usability. Reify-tech (talk) 18:45, 13 June 2014 (UTC)
- Agreed. A blocked editor did it in this edit. The sortability should be restored. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 23:12, 13 June 2014 (UTC)
- Mixed feelings about this matter. Since the world has many pastries and the list is long, alpha sorting is functional. However, being able to sort entries in the entire list also has its merits. I support leaving the list as-is for now, as one large table. If the page hits were to dramatically go down after this change to one table (check views), then perhaps the list could go back to alpha sorting. If not, then it's fine. Cheers, NorthAmerica1000 23:47, 13 June 2014 (UTC)
- I still don't see the benefits of lots of little tables, one for each letter. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 23:50, 13 June 2014 (UTC)
- E.g. if a person wants to find a particular pastry, then they can go right to its section using the toc. However, I like the present layout; fine by me. NorthAmerica1000 23:58, 13 June 2014 (UTC)

- Maybe there's a clever solution that is like this User:Anna Frodesiak/Pink sandbox, but actually works. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 10:20, 14 June 2014 (UTC)
- Clever idea from a clever girl. I concur with Anna. --Why should I have a User Name? (talk) 11:18, 14 June 2014 (UTC)
- Thank you, Anna Frodesiak, for fixing the Wikitable. Your solution is non-obvious, but clever, and doesn't break the sortability. The bars are handy when scrolling rapidly to get to an initial letter, and seem harmless otherwise. Reify-tech (talk) 13:42, 14 June 2014 (UTC)
- I meant "like that, but clever and one that works". :) The trouble is that it is not so clever because it doesn't work. When sorting, it goes all skew-womp. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 20:19, 14 June 2014 (UTC)
- It is a bit better now. Thoughts? User:Anna Frodesiak/Pink sandbox. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 23:00, 14 June 2014 (UTC)
- Wow, much better, and even a little elegant although still a kluge. The alphabet bars rearrange automatically according to the most recent sort request (including reverse sort), and continue to be useful. The bars are really just dummy list entries, and are treated by the Wikitable sort just like the other entries. They are visually distinct enough to aid in quick scrolling. without distracting from ease of reading the actual table entries. I really like it.
- We should pilot test this for a while on a few lengthy List articles, to see if there are any unintended consequences. If it passes the user test, it would even be worth documenting the technique (or possibly setting it up as a template?) so that more creators and maintainers of large Wikitables are aware of and can make use of this device. Reify-tech (talk) 23:49, 14 June 2014 (UTC)
- That sounds good. I hope it becomes useful. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 05:17, 15 June 2014 (UTC)

Nice layout at User:Anna Frodesiak/Pink sandbox. One matter is that the background color in the letter boxes is rather dark, and is a little overbearing on the page. I'd prefer to use a color that matches the very light blue one atop in the wikitable. NorthAmerica1000 05:04, 15 June 2014 (UTC)
- Thank you. The trouble with changing the background colour is that the thin separating lines would be revealed. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 05:17, 15 June 2014 (UTC)
- That's cool, it's fine to leave the color as-is. Once the formatting is worked out, go for it. The alphabetical spacing adds organization and logical breaks in the article. Should be fine. NorthAmerica1000 14:58, 15 June 2014 (UTC)
- Well, we could 1) leave it 2) change the colour to something paler and tolerate the bars 3) leave it and make the title bar something different 4) bug the people in charge of the code to make it so we can pick the colour. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 22:25, 15 June 2014 (UTC)
