War in Afghanistan??
I see stuff about the civil war, but apparently somebody forgot about the 2001 war in Afghanistan —Preceding unsigned comment added by 154.20.27.247 (talk) 14:22, 5 June 2008 (UTC)
Organization of conflicts
This table is flooding over with conflicts of lesser and lesser extent. Yet, I don't think there should be a removal of some of them from the article, since they are still notable. Rather, I think there should be an organization of the conflicts, in order to highlight the most important ones. I suggest that they be organized as:
- Major wars, by the GlobalSecurity.org definition
- Other conflicts
Any other organization-suggestions? Mikael Häggström (talk) 16:51, 29 March 2008 (UTC)
- There, I added the major wars as found in worldstatesmen.org, but there sure are other ones on the long list which also fill the criteria. Mikael Häggström (talk) 19:05, 31 March 2008 (UTC)
- I was thinking of putting an {{expand}} below the list of major wars, but I'm afraid it might spur somebody to start another one. Mikael Häggström (talk) 18:38, 11 April 2008 (UTC)
I have my doubts that the War in Afghanistan reaches 1,000 deaths a year, unlike the waziristan war. Also, Saudi-Arabia insurgency and the one in Algeria are relatively small conflicts, best would be to just colour the areas where these insurgency / bombings take place, since most of these countries consists of huge deserts. - PietervHuis (talk) 23:10, 15 April 2008 (UTC)
- You may, if you wish, switch places for the Afghanistan and Waziristan conflicts if you think so. I agree it would be better to specify where in Saudi-Arabia and Algeria there is conflict. If you know what areas are of concern you may update it, or propose the changes on the talk-page for the image. Mikael Häggström (talk) 16:02, 16 April 2008 (UTC)
- Good work, the map looks really great (not only because it's always nice to see more grey areas on it).
Kivu conflict (Congo) is still ongoing!
Government and rebel forces have recently again started battleing each other, aid workers had to flee certain areas becouse of the renewed violence. [1], it was also in the Belgian news recently (article in dutch): [2].
Buzzy78 (talk) 09:54, 26 April 2008 (UTC)
- I've updated the article and the lists to account for continued fighting. -- Beland (talk) 12:04, 23 May 2008 (UTC)
- Having read BBC and Reuters articles cited by the Wikipedia Second Congo War and Kivu conflict pages, I find it unrealistic to define the Kivu conflict that began again last month as separate from the Second Congo War. Instead, I believe it is more accurate to define the Kivu conflict as a post-treaty continuation of what is in most ways the same war. I therefore placed listed the Second Congo War and Kivu conflict under 1998 on the list of ongoing armed conflicts. Please correct me if this alteration is misleading to readers, but as far as I can tell, I think it is a more accurate representation. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.182.102.245 (talk) 23:55, 14 June 2008 (UTC)
Bogus information about Chechnya
Please stop inserting dubious/bogus figures for Chechnya. The link you just restored is broken, and has been broken since it was removed by another user over a week ago. The domain is for sale by lycos, it's not coming back. Also stop changing the number from 25,000 to 30,000. The link says "Estimates put the number of killed since 1999 during the second Chechen conflict at up to 25,000." Krawndawg (talk) 16:13, 7 May 2008 (UTC)
- It doesn't surprise me that someone like you considers the estimation by the Russian-Chechen Friendship Society "bogus information". The link is down yes, but that doesn't mean the information can't be used anymore. The person who removed it and someone else already found a cache of the page. There's also others sources that give about the same estimation [3]. As for the AI source, they indeed say 25,000 are killed, but if you read down they state another 5,000 have gone missing. - PietervHuis (talk) 01:07, 15 May 2008 (UTC)
- Missing doesn't mean killed. That's misleading. LokiiT (talk) 00:24, 17 May 2008 (UTC)
- We have an entire article on this subject, Casualties of the Second Chechen War. The figures given here should be the same as the intro to that article (which currently doesn't have any). -- Beland (talk) 17:44, 20 May 2008 (UTC)
WHAT ABOUT BEIRUT?
(The above header was added unsigned by 83.42.89.160.)
- I was also wondering if it would need to be added, but the violence seems to have abated, at least for now. -- Beland (talk) 01:57, 20 May 2008 (UTC)
Map update needed for Myanmar and Kivu
Internal conflict in Burma is on the list and is ongoing, but no part of Burma is shaded red. -- Beland (talk) 17:34, 20 May 2008 (UTC)
- Kivu conflict also needs to be added to this map; that article has a national map showing the region in question. -- Beland (talk) 12:05, 23 May 2008 (UTC)
Nagorno-Karabakh
It looks like Nagorno-Karabakh is still on the map, but this conflict ended in 1994, and it's not on the list here. -- Beland (talk) 18:38, 20 May 2008 (UTC)
- Or maybe it should be added to the list and the history article updated? I wrote earlier: "Apparently there is still fighting, albeit at a low level. This should probably be noted here and in various articles. No End in Sight to Fighting in Nagorno-Karabakh by Ivan Watson/National Public Radio. Weekend Edition Sunday, April 23, 2006." -- Beland (talk) 18:48, 20 May 2008 (UTC)
- Article updated. -- Beland (talk) 16:50, 8 August 2008 (UTC)
Cleanup tag
I'm not sure why the "cleanup" tag is still justified, so I removed it. If anyone has any specific items, feel free to mention them here and re-add it. The only thing I see that needs much work is finding references for various conflicts, and perhaps filling in unknowns. But there are citation needed tags already added. If you ask me, the casualty numbers should be the same as the supporting article, and should defer references there. -- Beland (talk) 19:18, 20 May 2008 (UTC)
Key colors don't match/Mislinking
http://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Image:2008-05_ongoing_conflicts.png The highlighted regions on the map are black and red, but the key uses yellow and red. The version displayed on the "list of ongoing conflicts" article page is consistent. 76.178.247.180 (talk) 04:04, 1 June 2008 (UTC)
- This sees to have been fixed. -- Beland (talk) 21:54, 15 June 2008 (UTC)
Yemen
The Sa'dah insurgency has apparently flared up again, so Sa'dah Governorate in Yemen needs to be highlighted on the map again. -- Beland (talk) 21:57, 15 June 2008 (UTC)
Morocco and algeria.
Why it is shown a conflicts in Moroccan and Algerian maps? and what kind of conflicts is that? what's going on there? The real conflicts is in the western Sahara. Koumed (talk) 03:49, 14 June 2008 (UTC)
- Still The two have a closed border as a product of the Sand War in addition to the occupation of the Sahara. —Justin (koavf)❤T☮C☺M☯ 19:00, 8 July 2008 (UTC)
According to the article on Western Sahara, violent deaths there have stopped, though there is still a political conflict. However the Insurgency in the Maghreb (2002–present) continues to cause violent deaths, though in 2008 so far only in Algeria. So it's appropriate that Algeria is highlighted red; Morocco is not currently highlighted. I've added the insurgency to this list. -- Beland (talk) 17:55, 8 August 2008 (UTC)
Korean war?
Not much action since the armistice, but it is still a war. --85.5.180.29 (talk) 17:21, 15 July 2008 (UTC)
- This page only includes conflicts that are actively producing violent deaths. I added a note in the intro referring readers to List of wars extended by diplomatic irregularity for information about declared but inactive wars. -- Beland (talk) 17:42, 8 August 2008 (UTC)
Sudan
Is there really a major war going on in Darfur right now? Haven't they made a ceasefire? --Tocino 018:26, 19 July 2008 (UTC)
- Well, according to the UN, there are still aerial bombardments and attacks on refugees and aid workers. I don't know if it's still at the level of 1,000 dead per year or not, but given these reports and events listed on Timeline of the War in Darfur, it's not unlikely. -- Beland (talk) 17:18, 8 August 2008 (UTC)
Sri Lankan Civil War - "major war"?
While no one would deny that the Sri Lankan Civil War has been a major war at many points in time, it seems questionable to me whether it still counts. Large-scale conventional military operations have basically ceased, and the Wikipedia article for the war describes it as a "low-intensity conflict." This is not to deny the importance of the war, of course, simply to question whether it belongs in the same category as Iraq or Darfur. 68.40.186.184 (talk) 23:58, 10 August 2008 (UTC)Noah
- I don't know what you're talking about, have you read the article properly? The "low-intensity phrase" refers to 2006, the conflict has since significantly escalated and ceasefire agreements have broken down. Large-scale SLA conventional military operations against LTTE positions have been taking place throughout 2008 and the army been conquering large areas of rebel-held parts of the country by conventional force. Over the last 2 years the government claims to have killed 9,000 LTTE fighters and lost 1,700 of its own soldiers. An average of over 200 people per month have died since 1983, that's bad enough but 2008 is by far one of the most intense years of fighting in recent times.Nwe (talk) 00:18, 14 August 2008 (UTC)

- sorry, I had to remove two red zones: Saudi Arabia and Northern Somalia. Also I blackened Georgia --TheFEARgod (Ч) 14:05, 10 August 2008 (UTC)
- Well, I really don't think there's any need to apologize for that - at least the map is up to date. --Anthony040 (talk) 16:36, 10 August 2008 (UTC)
- sorry, I had to remove two red zones: Saudi Arabia and Northern Somalia. Also I blackened Georgia --TheFEARgod (Ч) 14:05, 10 August 2008 (UTC)
burma?
burma isnt the name of this nation anymore. myanmar is at a internal conflict. i move that the name be changed to myanmar(Slipoutside (talk) 21:03, 4 September 2008 (UTC))
- This article has already gone through the meat grinder here on wikipedia. Just read the talk pages. After numerous mediations a cabal of mediators ruled that Burma is the preferred name. Fyunck(click) (talk) 22:11, 4 September 2008 (UTC)
- yeah i seen all that, i just figured that since the offical name was myanmar it should say that instead.(Slipoutside (talk) 17:31, 5 September 2008 (UTC))
Second Chechen War
..is not a major war right now. --TheFEARgod (Ч) 18:24, 14 September 2008 (UTC)
- You're right, it was listed as a regular conflict, but someone changed it to major war, I've changed it back. Grey Fox (talk) 23:54, 21 September 2008 (UTC)
