General Information
[edit]This list of museums in the state was separated from List of museums in the United States on January 07, 2008. Please see List of museums in the United States for all history prior to that date.
Feel free to include Template:Infobox Museum when adding or editing articles on individual museums. Noroton (talk) 00:52, 7 February 2008 (UTC)
Inclusion criteria
[edit]In February 2008 at Talk:List of museums in the United States, a consensus was reached on this statement on what kind of institutions to include on state museum-list articles:
- Historic houses or halls of fame may be listed if they function as or include public museums -- see Biltmore Estate, Plumb House, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and Baseball Hall of Fame for examples. Art galleries that function primarily to sell art should not be listed, but public art museums that use "gallery" as part of their name may be listed. Nature centers and botanical gardens may be listed only if they contain historical or educational exhibits in a museum format.
Also inappropriate for this list are planetariums, aquaria and zoos, which have their own lists. Please follow these criteria when considering additional items for this list, or suggest changes at Talk:List of museums in the United States. Keep in mind there are lists for institutions similar to museums, as noted in the See also section of this article. Noroton (talk) 00:52, 7 February 2008 (UTC)
- I don't concur. Having a separate list of Zoos probably makes sense in at the US nationwide level where there would be two actual lists and combining them would become too long. Since the only zoo in Delaware is Brandywine, do I create a list of one (1)? The American Association of Museums does consider these to be museums (http://www.aam-us.org/aboutmuseums/whatis.cfm ) and I don't think the concensus reached on the national list applies to such a small state (although I'm sure it's workable in Pennsylvania and Maryland). 3 Similar Museums, 3 Different Treatments
[edit]- The Afro-American Historical Society has hopes of turning a physical location into a museum. In the mean time, they are hosting exhibitions at other locations.
- The Delaware Children's Museum has hopes of turning a physical location into a museum. In the mean time, they are hosting a traveling exhibit at schools.
- The Mascot Hall of Fame, refreshingly, seems to have no desire to open their own physical facility. However, their collections have been featured at the Delaware Sports Museum and the Historical Society and they host real world (not online) events.
So we have three marginal or wanabe or emerging museums. But one is not included in this list at all, one is included in the grid right along all the other museums, and one is mentioned at the end of the article in it's own section.
I think these should all be treated the same. But should that mean inclusion, exclusion, or a separate section?RevelationDirect (talk) 01:33, 15 October 2008 (UTC)
- OK, I created a separate table for defunct museums and added two to the list. 3 state museums and 1 county museum have been mentioned in budget cuts so this section could grow, unfortunately. It was silly to say we wouldn't include the Mascot museum at the beginning of the article but then to include it in its own section later in the article. Also, I don't like subcategories of 1 so I added to main list. Pulled out the Delaware Children's Musem into it's own section because its a proposed museum that doesn't meet our qualification for the main list. (Yeah, that's a subcategory of 1 for now but I'm adding to it shortly.RevelationDirect (talk) 05:06, 10 May 2009 (UTC)
