This list is actually a summary of articles in Wikipedia. Because each entry is linked to an article which is sourced. When the items in a list are linked to sourced articles, than use of references is more or less optional. In Wikipedia while List of English monarchs has many references, list of German monarchs is devoid of references. (By the way, list of German monarchs has been on Wikipedia since 2002 and nobody has questioned sources.) Nedim Ardoğa (talk) 19:20, 22 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

modern Turkey ?

[edit]

the predecessor of modern Turkey must be removed. As you know, even in Turkey there are discussions and disputes on continuousness/discontinuousness (süreklilik/süreksizlik) between the Ottoman Empire and the Republic of Turkey. There is no evidence to prove the continuousness of mothers of the Ottoman Sultans with modern Turkey. Takabeg (talk) 04:14, 23 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

WHEN WE ARE UNABLE DECIDE ON THEIR OFFICIAL NAMES AND TITLES, MR ACİRAM IS ASKING US, I THINK TOO MUCH TO DETERMINE THEIR BORN NAMES, WHO HAD COLLECTED THEM FROM PREVIOUSLY WRITTEN FICTIOUS NOVELS WITH NO SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE AT ALL. HANDAN MAY BE THE EQUIVALENT OF HELEN, ELANA OR ANYTHING ELSE BUT THIS DOES NOT PROVE ANYTHING, BECAUSE YOU CAN NOT SHOW ANY SCIENIFIC EVIDENCE FOR A CHILD BORN 500 YEARS AGO, WHAT WAS HER NAME, FOR EXAMPLE IN PAROS ISLAND? BUT ACİRAM HAS THE EVIDENCE AND 100% SURE, BUT TAKEN FROM A NOVEL BOOK. IF ACIRAM INSIST ON THESE NAME, HE SOULD ALSO PROVİDE A PROBABILITY DISTRIBUTION FUNCTION ASSOCIATED WITH EACH OF THESE NAMES, AND ALSO PROVIDE THE TYPE OF THIS PROBABILITY FUNCTION WHICH CONNOT BE A UNIQUE ONE (İ.E. LIKE GAUSSIAN?, POISSON??, OR ERLANG????)

WHILE WE ARE UNABLE TO DECIDE ON THE OFFICIAL TITLES AND NAMES OF SULTANAS EXACTLY, SOME PEOPLE 100% SURE ABOUT THEIR BORN NAMES!!!. ON THE OTHER HAND, ACİRAM STİLL UNABLE TO CORRECT THE BIG MISTAKE HE CREATED ON WIKIPEDIA: WHY KANUNI'S DAUGHTER MİHRİMAH İS WRITTEN AS "SULTANA" IN THE TITLE PAGE? I SAID GO AND CORRECT IT INSTEAD OF ARGUING WITH ME ON THE UNNECESSARY TOPICS, NO CORRECTION CAME SINCE TEN DAYS. THEN YOU SHOULD NOT TELL ME THAT "WIKIPEDIA DEALS WITH FACTS" BECAUSE "NOT WİKİ, BUT I DEAL WITH REALITIES". I SAID, YOU PUT THE MATERIAL OF "MIHRIŞAH VALIDE SULTAN" WRONGLY UNDER THE PAGE OF "MIHRIŞAH SULTAN"; AND THEN YOU INCORRECTLY PUT THE MATERIAL OF "MIHRIŞAH SULTAN" UNDER THE PAGE OF "MIHRIMAH SULTAN" WHICH WAS INITIALLY CREATED FOR THE DAUGHTER OF KANUNI SULTAN SULEYMAN; BUT NO CORRECTION HAS BEEN MADE YET BY THE EDITOR. BECAUSE THE TITLE PAGE OF MIHRIMAH SULTANA SHOULD HAVE BEEN WRITTEN AS "SULTANA MİHRİŞAH" AND THE MATERIAL WHICH IS NOW IN THE PAGE "MİHRİŞAH SULTAN" SHOULD BE TRANFERED TO THIS NEW PAGE OR THE TITLE PAGE CAN BE WRITTEN AS "MİHRİŞAH VALİDE SULTAN" AS İN TURKISK WİKİ. PAGE

SIMPLY, WHAT YOU SHOULD DO IS A 120 DEGREE COUNTERCLOCKWISE ROTATION FOR THESE 3 SULTAN WOMANS

ALSO IN TURKISH PAGES, THERE ARE LOTS OF "erroneous" EXPRESSIONS. THERE IS NO NAME LİKE "NÜKHET-SEZA" BECAUSE IT HAS NO MEANING AT ALL, BUT "NÜKHET-SEDÂ" IS A MEANINGFUL ONE; AND THERE IS NO NAME AS "NAZIK-EZA" IT IS FUNNY AND ABSCURD, BUT "NAZİK-EDÂ" EXPRESSES A LOT OF MEANINGFUL THINGS. I THING THOSE PEOPLE TRANSLATING THESE DOCUMENTS FROM OTTOMAN TO TODAYS TURKISH ARE, SORRY BUT, "incompetent". THEY ARE MIXING THE ARABIC LETTERS OF "Z" AND "D".

WHAT CAN I SAY MORE??? NOW, YESTERDAY, I LEARNED FROM WİKİ THAT SULTAN ABDÜLHAMİD'S MOTHER BECAME ARMENIAN (100% SURE) WİTH NO PROBABILTY OF ERROR AGAIN AS CLAIMED BY EDITOS AND FRIENDS, WITH AN INTERESTING LOGIC OF "MY GRANDFATHER TOLD ME BECAUSE HIS GRANMA HAD TOLD HIM", YOU KNOW IF THIS IS TRUE FACT OF WIKIPEDIA, SOME PEOPLE MOSTLY THOSE FROM THE NEIGHBORING COUNTRIES OF TURKEY WOULD BE VERY PROUD OF THEIR ANCESTORS OTTOMAN SULTANS!!! needless to say that, THEY SHOULD PROVIDE REAL SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE OF "OTTOMAN DOCUMENTS" WITH THEIR CORRECT TRANSLATION TO TURKISH AND ENGLISH, IN CASE, THEY DONT HAVE THAT legal documentS, THEY SHUOLD MAKE NO CLAIMS ON BIRTH NAMES

NOTE FOR NEDİM BEY: I BELEVE THAT YOUR TABLE SHOULD BE MODIFIED IN SUCH A WAY AS TO INCORPARATE THE OTHER "SEVEN" VALIDE SULTANS, BECAUSE WE CANNOT SAY EXACTLY IF THEY ARE ADOPTIVE, STEP OR REAL MOTHERS. THEN, FOR SUSPICIOUS MOTHERS WE CAN PUT A SIGN LIKE (?) AND PROVIDE ALL SCIENTIFIC REFERENCES (BOOK WRITTEN BY SCHOLARS AND HISTORIANS, OMITTING THOSE TAKEN FROM NOVELS) REFENCES SHOULD BE LIKE THOSE I PROVIDED!!!

BIRTH NAMES
SHOULD BE REMOVED UNLESS SCIENTIFIC INSTRUMENTS PRESENTED!!!

GOOD LUCK AND PLEASE ACCEPT MY CONGRATULATIOS FOR YOUR RIGOURUS CONTINUING INVESTIGATIONS ON OTTOMAN HISTORY!!! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 193.255.108.20 (talk) 11:29, 6 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Mustafa I and Mahmut II

[edit]

This list is the list of bioligical mothers. Those who want to edit about Valide sultans, may refer to List of Valide Sultans. It is rather sad to note that we have very few reliable sources about the mothers of the sultans. Male historians probably had difficulties to learn about the life in the harem. Especially, their origins are obscure. I don't think the slave traders knew much about the Christian lands and the slave girls were probably unable to talk about their origin. But there seems to be concensus about the names of most of the mothers. Even then, the names of two mothers (of Mustafa I and Mahmut II) are unknown. Mustafa's mother was either Handan, or Fuldane or another woman who died while Mustafa was an infant. Mahmut's mother is said to be Nakshedil. But how ? Supposing, Nakshedil was really Aimée du Buc de Rivéry then we face to a strange time line; birth of Nakshedil in 1776 and birth of Mahmut II in 1785. It is biologically impossible. So I deliberately left those two mothers out of the list. But of course Nakshedil might be another (and older) woman. In this case her name can also be accepted. But unfortunatelly there is no source which gives her early life other than relating to du Rivery. Nedim Ardoğa (talk) 07:16, 7 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

  • Well, Nükhet Seda has already replaced Ayşe Sine and confusion over Mihrimah Sultan has already been cleared. Is there anything more ? On the other hand I am still sceptical about the mothers of Mustafa I and Mahmut II. Since the biological mothers of these two names are not known, maybe these two entries should be cleared. And a question; was Kösem of Serbian or Greek origin ? (The origins were not stated in the original form of the table) Nedim Ardoğa (talk) 06:50, 13 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Mothers of the Ottoman Sultans

[edit]

Your stub on "Mothers of the Ottoman Sultans" links "mihrimah" to mihrimah sultana who is the daughter of KANUNI not a SULTANE AND "ayşe sina" is still on your pink colored "Mothers of the Ottoman Sultans" LIST!!! instead of those two you should write "Emine Mihr-î-Şah" which is under "mihrimah" page &a new page for "Nükhet-Sedâ" is required instead of "ayşe-sina" THANKS!!!

"Emine Mihr-î-Şah"

[edit]

its content is now located at "mihrimah sultan" page, title should be modified in English page

"Nükhet-Sedâ"

[edit]

New page is required

"mihrimah sultanA"

[edit]

this page title should be converted to "mihrimah sultan" daughter of kanuni, there is no other "mihrimah sultan" in history AND THE SECOND "RABİA" is

Rabia Şermi

[edit]

Better to write Şermi to differentiate it from "rabia gülnûş" —Preceding unsigned comment added by 193.255.108.20 (talk) 08:51, 13 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

"mihrimah sultanA"

[edit]

NEDIM BEY: pembe renkli stub da "mihrimah sultan" yerine "mihrimah sultanA" yı koymuşşunuz, ama orada KANUNININ KIZI ANLATILIYOR, ESKİ HALİNE GETİRİNİZ VE ADINI "EMİNE MİHRİŞAH" OLARAK YAZABİLİRSENİZ doğrusu odur, ayrıca "AYŞE_SİNA" nın pembe renli stuptan çıkarılıp yerine "NÜKHET-SEDÂ" konması gerekir

CORRECT NAMES ARE: 1) EMİNE MİHRİŞAH & 2) NÜKHET-SEDÂ & 3) RABIA ŞERMİ

[edit]

Atyşe Sine was not a mother sultan

[edit]

I am glad to see that there are new contributions to this page. However I must say that this is a very problematic list. The contemporary historians (Vaka'i nüvis) never knew much about the details of harem life in the palace and as far as I can see at least the names of three mothers (of Osman I, Mustafa I and Mahmut II) are debatable. Moreover, some mothers are actually step mothers (mothers who assumed the role of the real mother after the death of the later.) It seems Ayşe Seniyeperver was one of them. (Her page exists in Wikipedia see Ayşe Sine). I'm going to revert her name in the list. But I'll also call the editor. Nedim Ardoğa (talk) 16:42, 18 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Where's your evidence is that she was the stepmother?

This woman, who you include as a mother, was not a woman of Abdulhamid I.

Mustafa was born relatively late in the reign of Abdulhamid I.

I have a feeling you like that Turkish women were the mothers

Probably you are a Turkish nationalist???.

Why do not you ask the descendants of the Ottoman dynasty?

Living in Istanbul at present 4 Sehzade.

I couldn’t understand why I am accused of being nationalistic ? Probably both Ayşe Sine and Nükhet Seda were slave girls. I created this article on the 23th of Nov. and in the original table (see the history: [1]) Ayşe Sine was the mother. But in December, somebody with sources editted the page claiming that Ayşe Sine was in fact the step mother and not the mother. The discussions about the identity of Mustafa’s mother can be read above. If there is enough source to back Ayşe Sine, then Ok, lets insert Ayşe Sine’s name instead of Nüket. But before doing that, the editor should edit the introductory sentence of the article Ayşe Sine which clearly states that she was not Mustafa's mother. (Ayşe Sine was ...consort of Ottoman Sultan Abdul Hamid I and Valide Sultan to her adoptive and step son Mustafa ).Nedim Ardoğa (talk) 13:20, 19 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Elongated names

[edit]

I hate edit wars. Because edit war is a lost of energy for both contributers. But an anonymous contributer (with an IP no of 193.255.108.20) insists using very elongated names for the mothers of the sultans. I am sure the contribution is appropriatelly sourced and serious. I appreciate all efforts to develop the article. But this article is actually a list of the names. All names (except 3) have articles in this Wikipedia and all names in the list are linked to the relevant articles and the readers can read the total names and the titles (in some cases longer than 10 words) in the articles. But the elongated names are not suitable for a list. Besides the elongated names are actually the non personal historical titles rather than the personal names. What is İkinci Kadın Efendi or Devletlü or Haseki etc.? Why to use these titles in the list. If we are going to use the titles in the list of the sultans how can we develop the name of Suleyman I (approximatelly a page long)in the List of sultans of the Ottoman Empire ? So I strongly object using elongated names in the list. I chose the article names which are also the well known names. (I admit that I was in error in Hürrem for Hürrem is a redirect and the name of her article is Roxalena, but funny, probably Roxalena was not her real maiden name anyway.) Please don't hesiatate to correct any faulty information (which was a case of Nüket Seda for instance). But please don't add extra names and titles to the list. Thanks. Nedim Ardoğa (talk) 06:49, 6 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

They had FOUR different category of wifes.
Category 1) Kadınefendis, (I, II, III, IV) FOUR wives from this category Category 2) IQBALs, (I, II, III, IV) FOUR wives from this category Category 3) GÖZDEs, (I, II, III, IV) FOUR wives from this category Category 4) PAIKs, (I, II, III, IV) FOUR wives from this category IN TOTAL: FOUR times FOUR equals SIXTEEN wives — Preceding unsigned comment added by 193.255.108.20 (talk) 14:08, 6 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
When the Kadınefendi gives birth to a son, her title was being changed to Haseki Sultan. Eventually, all the biological mothers were acquired the title of Haseki Sultan. Therefore, most of the pages in wikipedia are incorrectly titled as either Kadınefendi or Sultan, and these titles are WRONG, and should be corrected immediately. A biological mother of a sultan is either Haseki Sultan OR Valide Sultan.193.255.108.20 (talk) 14:16, 6 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

In case of Nükhet-Sedâ, the biological mother of Mustafa IV who died in 1850, she was BAŞ İKBAL and was not allowed to hold the title of Valide Sultan, instead the title of Valide Sultan was given to Ayşe Sine who was the Baş Kadınefendi for Abdülhamid I the father of Mustafa IV for a reason unknown to us. WHY?
This means that all the biological mothers were being assigned the title of Haseki Sultan since the had given birth to a son, but when this son becomes a sultan was not automatically given the title of Valide Sultan as in the case of Nükhet-Sedâ. Because Nükhet-Sedâ was not in the status of Kadınefendi but an IQBAL, that's why she was not promoted to the level of Valide Sultan. When Abdülhamid I had died, he had already FOUR surviving Kadınefendis and Nükhet-Sedâ was just an IQBAL, she was unable to be promoted for the position of Valide Sultan, but the other FOUR surviving Kadınefendis had no sons, therefore Nükhet-Sedâ remained as an IQBAL as the biological mother of Mustafa IV. 193.255.108.20 (talk) 14:39, 6 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Confusing or Incorrectly assigned titles in List of the mothers of the Ottoman Sultans

[edit]

My suggestion is this: Let's erase all titles as TITLES ERASED: Khātûn, Valide Khātûn, Sultâna, Second Haseki, Second Kadın Efendi, Fourth Kadın Efendi, Third Kadın Efendi in order not to be cause any furher confusion, but keep their full names. Your list have some of them named as Sultan or Hatun and some has no titles. Better to erase all titles. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 193.255.108.20 (talk) 15:46, 6 June 2011 (UTC) sorry193.255.108.20 (talk) 15:49, 6 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

When I started this list on 2010, 21 Nov., the list lacked maiden names. In 2010 December somebody added the maiden names (some of which are questionable). Soon the maiden names were linked. After SarahStierch's warning for four names, however I realized that all maiden names are either linked to disambiguation pages or to the official names which are already linked. Thus I cleared all maiden name links. Nedim Ardoğa (talk) 12:44, 3 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Good call! I was sort of scratching my head about this, as well. Sarah (talk) 16:49, 3 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

National projects

[edit]

Projects of Bulgaria, Greece and Serbia had been added. I created the page and I know that there are mothers of Balkan ancestry. But we can't include all national projects to this article. There are mothers of Ukrainian, Adygean, French, Italian etc ancestry. It is impracticval to include all. Thus I removed them. Nedim Ardoğa (talk) 14:12, 11 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Two changes

[edit]

With regard to recent changes I'd like to clear out certain issues.

  1. The ethnical background of Gülbahar Hatun II, the mother of Selim I has been given as Turkish from Dulkadirids. If so, the article about Gülbahar II should be changed accordingly. Presently it reads "a Greek convert".
  2. The name of Mustafa I's mother has always been a matter of controversy for Fulane is a general name. Now it has been given as Alime Sultan. If so, the article about Mustafa I and Handan Sultan should also be changed.

I'll call the editor. Nedim Ardoğa (talk) 13:03, 19 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Bayezid II

[edit]

There is a claim about Bayezid II's mother.I belive that this is a mistake. There are 2 sources that say that Mükrime Hatun was the real mother of Bayezid II. One cite and one 2009 book. While, there are more older and reliable sources for Gulbahar Hatun. I say that we should delete Mukrime Hatun. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jamesgoldbo007 (talkcontribs) 07:15, 14 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Valide sultan

[edit]

There are too many edits and reverts in this article. It seems the sources disagree on the names of some mothers. The most problematic ones are the following: (mothers of) Bayazıt II, Selim I, Mustafa I, Mustafa IV and Mahmut II. The problem stems partially from the definition of Valide sultan. Valide sultan is not necessarily the mother of the sultan. In some cases the step mother also assumes this title. But this artricle happens to be the list of biological mothers and step mothers will be deleted. Those who want to contribute to the list of valide sultans should edit Valide Sultan, another article (with a list) in this WP. It is because this is an unnecessary article. Valide Sultan is a notable institution. Those Ottoman Sultans who did not have a mother (died before their sultanate) accepted another as Valide Sultan. We should only have an article on Valide Sultan and make a list of them within that article and leave to sleep in peace "The mothers of Ottoman Sultans". Thank you. --Why should I have a User Name? List of the mothers of the Ottoman Sultans

[edit]
  • This page is available in 6 languages, but Valide Sultan in many languages. Keep both pages

68.100.172.139 (talk) 22:31, 14 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

^The reserach is continuing in this issue, in the future there may be some other changes as people reads old manuscripts. Since there is already separate pages in other languages, don't make it more complicated and keep both pages.. 68.100.172.139 (talk) 22:35, 14 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Strong Oppose This list is about the real mothers. Valide sultan, on the other hand, is only a title (almost "chief of the harem"). They are not the same thing and merging will result in losing valuable information. For example during the early years of the empire the title valide sultan was not used. Also, Hürrem Sultan, one of the most famous of all mothers was not a valide sultan. Nedim Ardoğa (talk) 13:39, 15 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I cannot understand. What information will be lost and why? For example, are we going to delete the Hürrem Sultan article if we merge this list with Valide sultan? On the other hand, and just for curiosity, what is the importance you seem to attach to Hürrem? I believe she did not give birth to Mehmet the Conqueror or Süleyman the Magnificent, but to Ayyaş or Sarı Selim... --Why should I have a User Name? (talk) 15:19, 15 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I didn't say her son was wonderful. But she is (along with Kösem and Safiye perhaps) the best known mother. However, she is not a valide sultan. As for the lost information , you should realize that this is a list article. The purpose of a list article is to list links to articles with a common category. By merging this list to Valide Sultan many links will be lost. Nedim Ardoğa (talk) 18:08, 15 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, these two lists shouldn't be merged. Also, we don't discuss about the characters of Ottoman Sultans here. It isn't important that Hürrem's son was Ayyas, she is the mother of an Ottoman Sultan. Also Kösem's son weren't so wonderful, one of them was Deli or Mad. Keivan.f (talk)

Bayezid II

[edit]

I have a theory about Gulbahar Hatun and Bayezid: 1. Ayse Hatun was wife of Bayezid II, mother of Selim I and nephew of Sitti Mukrime Hatun. If Mukrime was mother of Bayezid II, his marriage with Ayse Hatun would be incest and Selim would be deformed. 2. Gulbahar Hatun is widely regarded as Bayezid II's mother even in modern times. An example is a famous historical movie: Fetih 1453. 3. Sourcces that suport Mukrime Hatun theory are only two modern cites and they are low-reliable sources. 4. Bayezid II was born in 3 December 1447, while Mukrime Hatun was married to Mehmed II in 15 December 1449. Two years after Bayezid's birth. While Gulbahar Hatun was the first wife of Mehmed II and they married in 1446, a year before Bayezid II's birth. 5. Sitti Mukrime Hatun's wedding served as an alliance. And it wasn't in Mehmet II's liking. Probobly Mukrime was childles and died alone  in the old palace. — Preceding unsigned comment added by BatGuy278 (talkcontribs) 13:32, 21 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Please no theories. In WP original research is not permitted. Sources about the Ottoman harem are usually not completely reliable and sometimes conflicting. But we are not allowed to fill the gap with our theories. Nedim Ardoğa (talk) 13:44, 21 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
That's a fact. Emine Gülbahar Hatun has more and better sources. TurkBoy98765 (talk) 16:08, 21 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

NOT Rabia sultan Wrong correct it as Râbi’a Şerm-î

[edit]

This list is distinct from the list of Valide Sultans of the Ottoman Empire. Valide Sultan was the title of the mother of the reigning sultan. The mothers who died before their sons’ accession to throne, never assumed the title of Valide Sultan like Hürrem, Hatice Mu’azzez, Emîne Mihr-î-Şâh,[1][2] Râbi’a Şerm-î,[3] and Nükhet-Sedâ.[4] On the other hand, step mothers who were not the biological mothers but raised the princes whose mothers had died assumed the title of Valide Sultan like Ayşe Seniyeperver[5] and Rahîme Piristû (Perestu). So there were Valide Sultans who were not the mothers, and there were mothers who were not the Valide Sultans.
