Rather than cluttering the Masters athletics page with a long list of names, I created this as a place to add in the (Wikipedia notable) people who have participated in the sport. In a sport where thousands participate every year, there will certainly be more to come to light.

Before you jump on this list as a target to delete or merge, this is in its infancy and should grow as we find more notable people. This is not the final list nor have all options been exhausted.Trackinfo (talk) 04:56, 20 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

This is going to be an extensive, exhausting list! Perhaps it would be better as simply a category (Category:Masters athletes). Notability would be automatically assumed because an article would need to exist for them to appear in the category. Such open-ended lists are rarely a good idea because their sheer volume of content means that they provide little value, in-sight, or (possibly) purpose. For example, List of US Presidents is certainly a good idea and something that people will find useful. The clear lineage and associated information can be of much use. List of politicians, on the other hand, would be a bad idea: just as with masters athletes, how do we decide who should be included? Too much is left to an editor's subjectivity. The intent was to show the people of Wiki notability who have participated in this level of the sport. As the list has been compiled, there is a large number of people who have attained such notability thorough their athletic pursuits. For the minority who haven't, it is appropriate to show the crossover into other walks of life. It was certainly not my intent in creating this list to make a list of every person who participates in the sport though as this expands there will be some who join the both list and Wikipedia itself, based upon their Masters athletics achievements. The list has already gotten longer than I had expected, perhaps categorization within the list could help make it more readable.Trackinfo (talk) 03:36, 24 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • An IP user added a non-wikilinked name to the list. I sent him:
You added the name of Paul Gautier to the list. While I don't question the legitimacy of the addition, there is no sourcing and even if there was, there is no article about this person. So far, this article has kept within the wikipedia bounds by including only notable people involved in the Masters athletics endeavor. There are no red links (or in your case, the absence of links) in this list. If we were to allow such, this list could quickly become out of hand, with thousands of names being potentially added to the list. In the wikipedia oligarchy, such an unweildy list would then get challenged and probably deleted. So when Mr. Gautier has an article that survives notability challenges, please feel free to add his name to the list. Until then, I am reverting your edit.
