I just added Neusiedler See, however only 240 km² of it is in Western Europe, as it also crosses the border to Hungary. I felt however that it was necessary to write the full size of the lake. Jonmagne 16:24, 5 June 2007 (UTC)

A current understanding of Western Europe.

I decided to add some lakes from Scandinavia. I have not added them all, as I feel this list is getting out of hand. Who decides if a lake is among the largest lakes? I suggest limiting it to perhaps the 10 largest lakes of Western Europe. Also on geography, we need to be consequent throughout the Wikipedia. According to the article about Western Europe, the current understanding of it is as shown on the image to the left. There is another definition in the same article, which is defined by the United Nations. However, this article has not been true to that definition either, since according to the UN, the United Kingdom and Ireland are part of Northern Europe, and among others Italy is part of Southern Europe. The UN definition is however too narrow for an article like this, and is indeed only intended for statistical purposes. I noticed someone have earlier removed a lake from Austria on the grounds that the article is only about Western Europe... since when is Austria not in Western Europe?! It's clear that people are not looking at the facts when editing this article. I will continue to add lakes from Scandinavia if they are removed since Scandinavia is absolutely in Western Europe, unless someone can come up with really good evidence that keeping Scandinavia out of Western Europe is solidly founded on other articles on Wikipedia. Or we can use the UN definition and kick out Ireland, the UK, Spain, Italy and a few others ;)

I take it, that Scandinavia is not included in "Western Europe"? Because there are three lakes in e.g. Sweden that are larger than the largest one the current page:

I take it that at least Sweden is in Western Europe, which is why I have allowed myself to change the list, taking the information from the respective entires in the english and swedish editions of Wikipedia. Also, the Müritz is properly called just that, not Müritzsee, which is the name only for the southernmost part of the southern end of the Müritz itself.

Also missing are at least two lakes in Norway: Mjösa, 368 m2 Femund (Femunden), 202 m2. FØ, Norway

Selected region

Why only the Western Europe instead of the whole continent? — JyriL talk 20:59, 28 August 2007 (UTC)

It is odd to use the old political West in a geographical list. I suggest that all lakes > 100 km² in Europe are included on this list. I don't think it is wise to use sub-regions such as western Europe because they're so unclear. After all, there are not that many large lakes in the Eastern Europe if you don't count Russia. — JyriL talk 00:25, 29 August 2007 (UTC)

Azerbaijan is not in Europe

I see that a lake (or rather a reservoir) in Azerbaijan has been added. This is not a European lake and belongs somewhere else. Antipoeten 03:29, 4 September 2007 (UTC)

Depends how Europe is defined. Based on the map in the article the lake barely belongs within the borders of Europe.--— JyriL talk 22:56, 17 November 2007 (UTC)

Finnish lakes

I recommend someone to look at this list in Finnish. It includes some lakes that might be included in your list. http://personal.inet.fi/koti/kauko.huotari/jarvet.htm Antipoeten 03:32, 4 September 2007 (UTC)

For Finnish lakes I used data from the Finnish Environmental Institute homepage where all lakes in Finland larger than 10 km² are listed.--— JyriL talk 22:56, 17 November 2007 (UTC)

Ijssel/Ijsselmeer

Currently, the lake known as the Ijsselmeer in the Netherlands is listed as having it's primary name as 'Ijssel'. I'm changing this to 'Ijsselmeer', and am removing 'Ijsselmeer' from the list of secondary names. The lake is known in the Netherlands and internatinally as the 'Ijsselmeer', and the 'Ijssel' is a river which empties in the lake. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 64.185.154.51 (talk) 04:13, 29 June 2008 (UTC)

razelm lake

razelm(razim) lake is not included in the count ...according to this page http://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Razelm_Lake it has a area of 1000 sq km as the razelm/sinoe group and 500km if taken alone...it should be added to the list —Preceding unsigned comment added by 79.117.48.198 (talk) 21:39, 10 October 2008 (UTC)

about the regions

Why is lake Peipus in the eastern region (together with Azerbaijan??), while parts of it are in the northern region, like Lämmijärv and Pskov? Other lakes in Estonia are in the northern region, including the ones shared with Russia. --H2ppyme (talk) 11:45, 11 January 2010 (UTC)--H2ppyme (talk) 11:45, 11 January 2010 (UTC)

Akkajaure

According to the article Akkajaure is a reservoir.--Urjanhai (talk) 10:34, 20 February 2010 (UTC)

Black sea / Caspian Sea?

Should these be included in this article? They are only partly in Europe, but then again the page is called Largest Lakes of Europe, not Largest Lakes entirely in Europe. Bainseyy (talk) 20:59, 7 March 2010 (UTC)

Who would think of the Caspian as european? Other than that, does anyone have a better take than me? As for the Black Sea, it belongs here as much as the Mediterranean or the Baltic. Sorry, Bainseyy, but that's not a lake. Regards, --G-41614 (talk) 10:00, 8 March 2010 (UTC)

Saimaa

The list is confused over the meanings of Saimaa. The bigger is "Saimaa" and smaller is "Suur-Saimaa". However, "suur" means big or great, and I would translate it "Greater Saimaa", so that should clearly mean it should be the name of the larger one. "Saimaa" is sort of 'lobbed' to mean the larger one, when, IMO, it should only be the smaller one. 212.50.203.198 (talk) 14:05, 24 March 2014 (UTC)

Volume

Does anyone else think that it would be of interest to add a sortable column giving volumes of these lakes? Any opinions? Dbfirs 09:56, 20 December 2014 (UTC)

La Serena reservoir

I suggest Embalse de la Serena reservoir, 139 km2, Spain SZERVÁC Attila (talk) 13:53, 12 October 2015 (UTC)

Iron Gates

Why is "Iron Gates" included in this list? There's no such lake anywhere. It's a section on the Danube river, if anything. The link that points to the corresponding Wikipedia page doesn't say it's a lake either, and it's not included in any other lists whatsoever, not even the Romanian/Serbian version of the list, although this body of water is supposed to be on the border of those two countries. I suggest this entry be deleted from the list. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 87.229.121.2 (talk) 19:48, 3 January 2018 (UTC)

Gonna support that Benica11 (talk) 23:51, 10 November 2018 (UTC)

Regions and regional ranking

Why are the arbitrarily-defined regions included in this article? What does the ranking within arbitrarily-defined regions provide us? Why are cross-regional lakes assigned to some specific region? If propose to remove the regions aspect and the regional aspect from this article altogether. 213.184.49.21 (talk) 18:24, 24 April 2021 (UTC)

Removed! --T*U (talk) 08:45, 8 December 2022 (UTC)
