To the anonymous users who keep reverting this article back to this version, will you please discuss it and not just keeping on acting up until you get what you want. I have protected the page to stop this stuff. The problems are fair clear: there is never going to be an objective way to determine the "best" Tamil films and language like "It has become a super hit and the Chennai 600028 team has come once again with a brilliant effort" is completely biased and not neutral. That's the problem people are having with it. We need to figure out a more objective measure like something basic (most awards won, which isn't great, or just a simple box office numbers, which have to based on something). Otherwise we have an article where people will just playing with it everyday for no good reason other than different opinions. -- Ricky81682 (talk) 06:08, 26 April 2009 (UTC)

Rajnikanth's Shivaji had grossed $28,155,000 and it is an industrial record and Kamalhaasan's Dasavataram had grossed $57,766,000, but these two films are not marked as industrial record Jimgra (talk) 13:48, 29 October 2010 (UTC)

In the list of the top 10 movies of kollywood, Vassol Raja MBBS has grossed $ 10 millions in the box office (http://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Vasool_Raja#cite_note-0). But in the lis we can see Padayappa which is listed without any link and it has grossed only $9,354,000, same for Thiruttu Payale with $9,000,000. Could you please correct this and put Vassol raja in the appropriate ranking? Thank you —Preceding unsigned comment added by 92.142.250.128 (talk) 22:01, 17 October 2010 (UTC)

... I don't think anything could be done based on this request from Maharathan as there is no proof about the amount spent on the promotions and also regarding the revenues from the television programs - like audio release/making of Enthiran movie/making of Enthiran songs etc.. Also, not sure about the user's claim on the wrong reports on box office collections, the figures in the report could be in gross or net - a figure in gross will always be higher than the net. - EChanakya
How & Why are the Gross earnings converted to US Dollars ($$$) instead of INR?
US Dollar rates keep fluctuating all the time. For example Historic USD to INR is given here.In 1950 it was Rs 4.76p , 1960 : Rs 4.67p, 1970 :Rs7.86, 1980 : Rs7.86, 1990 Rs 17.50 and for 2000 it was Rs 44.94 etc. So for a movie like P. U. hinnappa’s Uthamaputhiran (1940) the collection shows $101,000.Can anyone explain on what exchange rate the movie was converted.(Was it at 1940 rates or something recent).
If the $ Rate collection is based on historic exchange rates, then it can be considered only partially correct, as there are lot of fluctuations and unequall rise in the USD to INR exchange and were never graduall. As you can see from the earlier tabulation; the rates raised rapidly from 1990’s (a sudden 100% rise) and somewhere in 2003’s the exchange rates were close to Rs 50 and then again it dropped to Rs 40.After all the above calculations ,the collection value has to be adjusted again for today’s Price(i.e. adjust to inflation-Value of Rs 10 in 1947 will be worth Rs 511.12p in 2010).This data is available from the ‘Office of Economic Advisor’-Finance Ministry. But in the latter case Inflation was always gradual as we experience all the time.
But if the rates for the above mentioned 1940 movie were converted from recent exchange rates then the whole data is skewed. The results would be totally misleading. For better judgment why don’t we stick to INR rates only and simply equate the gross earnings by adjusting for inflation. That would give us the correct yardstick to measure the returns. Bollywood industry follows the same pattern.
And moreover some earnings lack source and for some; there is none.

- Use of dollars helps comparison with other film industries and acts as a deflator of rupee fluctuations. Exchange rates are annual closing rates published in eh.net. Source collection is a work in progress. For starters, see tamilcinema.com archives. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 117.193.50.203 (talk) 19:36, 13 July 2010 (UTC)

$84,000,000 for Enthiran is a single self-published source
Note that there is an impressive looking list of seven footnotes against Enthiran, however only one footnote actually supports the figure that has been cherry-picked and that is a publicity press release by the film promoters. The source quotes what appears to be a rounded-up estimate of possible box-office income rather than anything than might relate to published accounts or other verifiable quality sources. Please Delete this page Its full of mistake. 1. Manmathan Anbu takes fourth place..It didnt even run 30 days in theater, Its a mega flop movie. 2. All Kamal (manmathan anbu and dasavatharam) movie sources are not real sources. They are not specifying any cost/gross values. They are just random sites. 3. Enthiran collection is 311 cr. It is adjusted to USD is $69,111,111.
I request you to change the figure $84,000,000 to $69,111,111.
The source is http://www.indiaglitz.com/channels/tamil/article/63423.html# But the page shows $84,000,000. The actual collection is $69,111,111. So Please change the figure.
ENTHIRAN Producers, Sun Pictures declares the Collection is Rs. 179 Crores. and other people are telling big figures....!!!
WHY SOME PEOPLE ARE NOT ACCEPTING THE TRUTH FROM THE "CHILD'S MOTHER"?'
FOR THE QUARTER ENDED 31st DECEMBER’ 2010, the Revenues grew by 51.36% to Rs.597.99 crores (which includes 179 crores from Enthiran). The Net Profit (PAT) also was higher by 48.41% at Rs.225.49 crores.
Hence profit of entire SUN Network for the quarter ending Dec is 225.49 crores. Obviously Enthiran profit is just 47 crores. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 49.137.66.200 (talk) 20:34, 1 February 2011 (UTC)

There has been a similar page and template here Highest-grossing Tamil films which is semi-protected.So this page attracts vandalism of content and template from "fans" of their favourite actors to show their mass/uplift their "actors" status by changing the earnings of certain movies higher and other movies lower or even removing certain movies from this list.So i request a discussion for merger/deletion of this page in good faith

Deletion of link
http://eeroju.in/vijay-kathi-tamil-movie-75days-box-office-collection-report-and-poster/ This link for kaththi BO collection for 75days was mentioned to be 202 crores which i found it to be baseless as i quote a Better citation from International_Business_Times http://www.ibtimes.co.in/box-office-rajinis-lingaa-enters-25th-day-vijays-kaththi-completes-75-days-619327 which states that Lingaa was the highest Grossing South indian film(including dubbed version) raking over 140 crores which almost correspond with our citation for Lingaa from Andhrabox office as 148.75 crores..At the same time it states Kaththi as highest grossing tamil film(original version) getting over 130 Crores(Current link from andhraboxoffice site mentions 124.5crores as of 17/dec/2014 for kaththi) at the end of 75 days(5/1/2015)..So i beleive the link from eeroju.in is absolutely baseless..But i don't add Kaththi to be 130 crores(as it is mentioned in the link it is over 130 crores which is arbitrary)..If Someone cannot find a better source for kaththi which is now believed to be over 130 crores atleast we can add the same reference from ibtimes.co.in.. Please remove Mankatha from the list. The source given for it is Behindwoods, there they have told that it is said by Sun Pictures in Twitter. What the truth is, it was a tweeted by a fake account. Here they have compiled everything regarding this on that time itself. http://www.moviecrow.com/News/481/7-easy-steps-to-creating-box-office-numbers ..Check this, and it had(Sunpictures_)as account name before, (in the link) but its not there in real now.
Just wondering how the film made 130c, If then it must be atleast in Biggest opening day/week record which should exist til now.. The radanmeadia head (distributor of Mankatha) Radikasarathkumar has said the film earned 45 crores. ( https://twitter.com/realradikaa/status/126643649193840642 ) 45 crores totally not possible worldwide but she would have said about total Tamil Nadu collections. If only 45 crores in Tamil Nadu how it collected 85 crores from other territories?! Half and more than the total collection comes only from home place Tamil Nadu. something wrong in the source, I would request you to do the needful.
117.193.193.242 (talk) 15:21, 21 May 2015 (UTC)
- Done Since, the tweet that claimed mankatha's overall collection is not available in Official Twitter account of Sunpictures it is believed to be created by a parody account..So, it has all grounds to be removed from List of Highest grossing Tamil movies.Though Behindwoods considered to be reliable, but it need not be reliable always!
P.S: I have not considered Radhika's tweet for this decision as she is not a Worldwide Distributor for this film MeeGhaMan (talk) 17:42, 21 May 2015 (UTC)

- Why? S Thanu estimated the worldwide collections to be 125 crore. Kailash29792 (talk) 07:23, 19 May 2015 (UTC)
- Not done: For any movie claim by a producer has more value than a distributor..In his interview to news media he has been quoted mentioning "125 crores" but in the Video he is mentioning 187 crores(Here he mentions some other source claims 187 crore,in the presence of Actor's Fans)..Usually producers wont reveal the exact gross(since it is a taxable income)..In this case he revealed it and it holds a value. If there is a clear statement by him mentioning 187 crores in Printed News media then it can be published.
