[edit]Have run out of time but will be continue working backwards from 1996. --TBM10 (talk) 23:37, 13 April 2011 (UTC)
- Done, dated back to 1987, before which I can find no reliable sources for information. --TBM10 (talk) 12:54, 14 April 2011 (UTC)
Happy to help add further info. Having previously had a website dedicated to the National and a large volume of books on the subject.
Most recent notable ommissions were Smiths Man (the former Topham Winner)in 1988 and Duncreggan in 1983.
Smiths Man was a bonny grey who sadly injured a leg and was pulled up after just two fences. He was later put down at Jenny Pitman's stables.
Duncreggan was an irish outsider ridden by Gerry McGlinchey who was killed in a fall at the first Canal Turn in 1983. — Preceding unsigned comment added by YCroatia (talk • contribs) 11:51, 25 July 2011 (UTC)
- Info but haven't got a source other than my own knowledge of the race as a historian and the newspaper cuttings of the time. The Last Fling was killed instantly in a fall at the Canal Turn, Brown Trix and Seeandem both fell at opposite ends of the brook and later destroyed, Alverton killed instantly from a broken neck, Land Lark suffered a heart attack jumping the fence, Beau Bob broken neck, As mentioned previously Duncreggan is missing having taken a fatal fall at the Canal Turn in 1983, Also missing is Racoon in 1970, Belsize II 1960, Parasol II & Cardinal Error both in 1953, Royal Mount 1950, Bora's Cottage 1949, Lindhill 1947, Masterful 1923, Grey Dawn 1922, Comfit 1906, Loch Lomond 1904, Carrollstown 1894 collapsed after the race, Usna 1888, Laburnum 1875, Nuage 1872. With those already listed that covers every horse officially reported in the press as losing their life in the Grand National. The long gap between 1907 and 1922 is probably more due to to the arrival of the cini cameras, which allowed the vast majority of the public to see the race for the first time in newsreels. Many were shocked at seeing the race for the first time and possibly lead to a suppression of news of fatalities for fear of generating public anger against the race. There is little doubt that at least five horses and as many as ten died during this period but none are ever recorded in any paper. One other notable point from notes above is Smith's Man whom I have no record of as being destroyed after the 1988 National. Don't have the records in front of me but did he even take part in '88? definately in '87 getting round in 11th.Captainbeecher (talk) 11:36, 11 October 2011 (UTC)
- Another fatality, Largo 1946 but haven't got a source yet other than my own knowledge. Should this be added:
- This is a photograph of Largo's fall in 1946 at Becher's Brook. However, I don't think Largo died from the race and only one death is recorded. However, I may be wrong here.Aszx5000 (talk) 07:57, 17 April 2023 (UTC)

1968 Grand National
[edit]Champion Prince was destroyed after being brought down at the water jump (one of several fallers which included Foinavon). ref Grand National The Complete Record. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 78.111.203.210 (talk) 17:29, 24 April 2014 (UTC)
- I can see references to Champion Prince being killed on blogs etc, but I can't find any proper WP:RS that could be used in a Wikipedia article? Aszx5000 (talk) 08:02, 17 April 2023 (UTC)
