Revisions and Merges (MAR2013)

[edit]

Today, I began revising this list to prepare it for a nomination as a Featured List. I intend to expand the tables, add prose introductions, and make this article more comprehensive. I've merged information from Director-General of New Netherland which was improperly named (only one of the directors was a "director-general"), added a list of New Sweden Governors and the brief failed New Albion colony. Then I sectioned it into before 1664 colonies, and after 1664. I should finish my revisions within a few hours, and I am using List of colonial governors of Massachusetts as a model.--ColonelHenry (talk) 19:02, 21 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Gov. John Reading

[edit]

My wife is a direct descendent of (acting) Gov. John Reading. The entries for John Reading claim that Readington Village and Readington Township were named in his honor. This is false. These were personal properties of John Reading long before he became involved in New Jersey's administration. He purchased these properties and much more land using funds derived from his cultivation of tobacco in southern New Jersey. His tobacco farms were very profitable, making him one of the wealthiest persons in the colony of New Jersey, after starting out nearly penniless. Who was responsible for naming his own personal property "in his honor". This makes no sense. Please correct these entries. You know far better than I how to do this to your standards. Note that back then (1700-1760), banks were a joke. Money was a joke. The only safe thing to do with business profits was to buy land. — Preceding unsigned comment added by DoctorBlue2 (talkcontribs) 08:59, 29 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Numbering of governors for 1702-1776

[edit]

Most of the individual colonial governor pages for the 1702-1776 period give an ordinal position for each governor. For example, Edward Hyde, 3rd Earl of Clarendon is denoted as the 1st governor in his infobox, Robert Hunter (colonial administrator) is 3rd in his, etc. and their infoboxes link to this article which has the list but no numbering, whereas List of governors of New Jersey does. Since the counting isn't obvious (it wasn't to me until I realized that acting governors don't get counted, by convention I presume?), I think a number column should be added to the tables in this section. -- Erjwiki (talk) 15:39, 19 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
