Limited or biased?
[edit]For whatever reasons, this list is woefully inadequate -- really little more than a stub. there have been prodigies on other instruments besides piano and violin -- winds, brass, percussion -- the have been prodigies in other genres than classical (notably jazz), and there seems to be a dearth of female musicians on the list.
Would suggest that the definition of "child prodigy" being applied here is dated, and unresaonbly restricted. A more current difinition:
"Child prodigies are defined as those individuals who reach a professional level of achievement in a culturally relevant domain before the age of 10 or adolescence."
Why isn't Gauss in the list? Aminabzz (talk) 22:01, 16 September 2023 (UTC)
List criteria
[edit]I have reverted recent additions to the list for failing to meet the criteria. Quoting old discussions of this talk page:
"This article is headed by a statement, supported by three citations: "A child prodigy is defined in psychology research literature as a person under the age of ten who produces meaningful output in some domain to the level of an adult expert performer." Those who do not meet this definition do not belong on this page (and even less so if they do not merit a WP article and are evalauated as non-notable)." Gor1995 𝄞 16:50, 6 April 2024 (UTC)
Removal of child prodigies
[edit]@Idk12365 You seem to be misunderstanding the scope of this list. This is not a list of "composer prodigies" but a list of music prodigies, which encompasses the entire field of music and not just composition. More importantly you removed three individuals widely cited as music prodigies in the published literature. See the following:
- Anton Rubinstein is described as a child prodigy in relation to music on The life of Musorgsky, p. 57, the first paragraph of Chapter 2 in Anton Rubinstein: A Life in Music, Chapter 9 in St. Petersburg, and on page 162 of Leo Ornstein: Modernist Dilemmas, Personal Choices among many other sources. The scholarly opinion is that he was a child prodigy.
- Paganini is described as a child music prodigy on page 123 of Crescendo of the Virtuoso: Spectacle, Skill, and Self-Promotion in Paris During the Age of Revolution, and Chapter 2 Musical Prodigies: Perilous Journeys, Remarkable Lives is entirely devoted to him
- César Franck is described as a child prodigy in relation to music on page 105 of Playing the organ works of César Franck, page 117 of Paris, a Concise Musical History, page 10 of Vincent D'Indy and His World, The Great Pianists, page 358
I am reverting your removal per these sources. If you feel certain aspects of their musical gifting shouldn't be included (such as composition) that is fine, but being a violin or piano virtuoso as a young child also is a valid way to be a music prodigy. Their names should not be removed per the above sources. You may place them in a different section (such as under their instrument), but not remove them from the page.
