Comparison to Joanees is not consistent

[edit]

In the "Records and trivia" section under Major Championships, it says:

"Woods and Bobby Joanees are the only golfers to have won 10 majors before the age of 30. Jones achieved 13 majors in 21 attempts, (winning percentage 62%), while Woods achieved 10 wins in 44 attempts (a 23% winning ratio)"

That is incorrect and inconsistent.

Whoever compiled this stat apparently didn't notice that Tiger didn't play the PGA in 1995 and 1996 (as he wasn't a pro then).

Second, you are counting Bobby Joanees's US Amateurs as majors, so IMO you should also count Tiger's. He won that event in 1994, 1995, and 1996, at ages 18, 19, and 20. He is the only golfer to ever win three in a row.

Third, you are apparently counting all of Tiger's attempts at majors, including amateur attempts before age 21. But you start counting Joanees's majors with his first win at age 21, ignoring ten majors he lost before then (according to his entry in Wikipedia). While it may make sense to not include his attempt at age 14 in his percentage, it should still be noted so that the record is complete. And eight of Jones's attempts were at age 18 or later. Since you count Tiger's attempts at that age, you should count Jones's attempts.

IMO, to be consistent, you should count US Amateur titles for both players, and you should begin at age 18 for both players. If you do that, Tiger has 13 wins in 45 attempts (42 pro majors and three US Ams), while Jones has 13 wins in 29 attempts.

An alternative would be to begin both men's count at age 21. Then Jones would have 13 out of 21 (as stated on the Jones web page cited in the article), and Tiger would have 10 out of 36, but his US Amateur wins would not count. I see no justification for not counting them.

Or you could just include every attempt by both players. That would give Jones 13 out of 31. I don't know whether Tiger entered any US Ams before age 18.

In any case, the article as it stands gives an inconsistent and misleading comparison, and it should be corrected to be more consistent and informative, with regard to the teenage amateur record of both players.

No. 1 for 500 weeks, no?

[edit]

I was just watching the golf channel's presentation of the US Open Monday Playoff highlights, etc. and they commentator/interviewer said Tiger has been number 1 for the big 500 weeks now - and Tiger responded really? or he didn't know, etc. But the article here says 497 - Are we not counting by actual time elapsed? or what? like the first Monday to the next Monday would be week 1, and so on. What's the discrepancy? Maybe it just hasn't been updated, though that's doubtful. ~ GoldenGoose100 (talk) 05:40, 17 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hmm... Someone just edited the page to say 500 weeks after all as number 1. I am wondering if an edit war will start? I don't know how people are counting - but please comment on my question anyway for reference. ~ GoldenGoose100 (talk) 05:45, 17 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I updated the number of weeks and the date. I've added a reference now. Tewapack (talk) 06:05, 17 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Career Scoring Average

[edit]

The article states "Woods has the lowest career scoring average in PGA Tour history", but does not state what that number is. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 174.56.173.184 (talk) 14:52, 26 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
