Purpose for creation
[edit]I created this page to offload the main breast cancer page InvictaHOG 05:16, 29 December 2005 (UTC)
Did Brett Somers have breast cancer?
[edit]The article states:
"Brett Somers, Canadian-born U.S. actress, TV personality"
The actress denies it, and some people believe that a rumor started because Suzanne Somers (same last name) was diagnosed with breast cancer, and someone mistakenly thought it was Brett.Bcsurvivor 19:45, 2 March 2006 (UTC)
Re changes made on 3/3/2006
[edit]1) Myrna Loy: According to the source cited for Loy: After surviving breast cancer and a double mastectomy, Myrna Loy died during cancer surgery in New York City York and was cremated; her ashes are buried at Forestvale Cemetery, in Helena, Montana.
Thus there is no definitive proof even of the nature of the surgery or if it was related to her breast cancer, which her own source states that she "survived".
The nature of the surgery was never disclosed when she died; somehow IMDB stated it was cancer surgery; even so there is no guarantee it was related to the breasts. The source used by Bcsurvivor specifically states [a]fter surviving breast cancer.... So I removed her.
Mildred Dean, James Dean's mother died of ovarian, not breast cancer (so I transferred her data to the list of victims of ovarian cancer (which links from ovarian cancer page).
Susan Sontag died of leukemia which apparently resulted from massive amounts of chemotherapy and radiation used to treat her original cancer of the breast some 30 years back. Leukemia must be regarded as the cause of death, not her 30 years+ long ago battle with breast cancer.
Anyway, I would like to congratulate Bcsurvivor on her excellent work, and on having won her own battle with breast cancer.
Susan Sontag
[edit]I removed Sontag from the list based on the following from her own Wikipage:
- Susan Sontag, American author/activist who died ...from complications of myelodysplastic syndrome evolving into acute myelogenous leukemia. The MDS was likely a result of the massive doses of chemotherapy and radiation she received 30 odd years earlier when she was diagnosed with advanced breast cancer, and later with a rare form of uterine cancer. (see [[1]]).
Susan Sontag
[edit]Why would you remove Sontag from the list if people like Julia Child and others who were diagnosed with breast cancer but died from other causes, are on the list? Sontag belongs on the list even more than Julia Child and others because Sontag had metastatic breast cancer - meaning that if she hadn't happened to die from something else first, she would certainly have died from the metastatic breast cancer because it's an incurable death sentence.Bcsurvivor 21:22, 4 March 2006 (UTC)
Well, OK, but Michael Milken and Lance Armstrong were also diagnosed with metastatic cancers, that appeared to be terminal, and they both survived; so who knows. Sontag was riddled with cancer and can hardly be described as a "survivor" in any sense, but the fact remains that she died of the leukemia that she developed more than 30 years later from the chemotherapy and especially radiation therapy she received for her then advanced cancer. The uterine cancer was sort of the topper.
I am extremely uncomfortable listing her as a "survivor", because obviously that does not describe her fate, although she can be said to have survived her initally devastating diagnosis over 30 years ago, as a "long-term (but ultimately not successful)" cancer survivor.
As for Julia Child she was a successful survivor of breast cancer and died of natural causes many years later, aged 91.
I suggest we remove Sontag altogether until a "List for Victims of Leukemia" or a "List for Victims of Uterine Cancer" are established.

Susan Sontag
[edit]There are always a certain number of "miracles" when it comes to cancer, but don't count on it if you or anyone you know is given a "metastatic" diagnosis.
I suggest that another category be created for breast cancer patients like Sontag who would have died from metastatic breast cancer but were "hit by a bus" before it could happen. I agree that I don't like her being listed under a breast cancer "survivor" category, but I certainly don't think that she should be completely ignored considering the suffering that she endured due to breast cancer.Bcsurvivor 23:48, 4 March 2006 (UTC)
OK, so for now, we will list her among the deceased pending further categorizations. I will compose a brief explanation.
70.19.55.88 01:21, 5 March 2006 (UTC)
New Category
[edit]A new category was created for breast cancer patients who died from other causes. One of the unfortunate ironies of chemotherapy and radiation for cancer patients is that chemotherapy and radiation can CAUSE cancer, and they can certainly cause kidney and liver and lung problems, etc. As a result, many cancer patients develop other cancers besides developing metastasis or spread of their cancer or, as with Erma Bombeck, develop severe kidney damage which eventually kills them.Bcsurvivor 14:58, 5 March 2006 (UTC)
Deceased relatives of famous people
[edit]Ideally, it is desirable to know the name of the deceased, but if the victim's relative is truly famous, than I think that the information should be allowed to be posted, and when the name is discovered, it will, of course, be updated to reflect that information. The famous person is the only reason that his/her mother or grandmother or wife is listed here. Bcsurvivor 14:58, 5 March 2006 (UTC)
I disagree, Elizabeth Hurley's grandmother or whoever is nor more or less important than any other name on the list. Making an entry without a first and last name (e.g. "mother of ..." or "grandmother of ..." does not look right and should not be entered. Sadly, there is no shortage of names to be entered, unfortunately. If it's that important try to get the full name b/c if the relative is so "famous", it shouldn't be too hard. Ricardo Chavira and James Denton's mother's names were found.

Why did someone delete 2/3 of this web page?
[edit]Why did someone delete all of the breast cancer survivors and all of the breast cancer patients who died from other causes? I've wasted too much time on this already. Let someone else decide if it is relevant for an encyclopedia to have information regarding "estranged" relatives or if that is just pure unadulterated insipid fan gossip.
Should we list Meg Ryan's extramarital affairs, as well? Is that also relevant? Whether someone is estranged from their mother does not affect the fact that they might have a genetic link to breast cancer and be worried about also being diagnosed with it, which is what is relevant in my humble opinion. Also, did anyone provide a link to PROVE that Meg Ryan and her mother are still estranged? I thought everyone wanted proof.Bcsurvivor 13:40, 18 March 2006 (UTC)
Duplicate list
[edit]There was a duplicate list at Category:Deaths from breast cancer (see revision as of 06:29, 24 March 2006). There may be entries there that could be merged to this list. --Ezeu 06:25, 24 March 2006 (UTC)
Neutral Point of View
[edit]I don't think that anyone should toss the term 'terrorist' around on a webpage that is devoted to the victims of breast cancer.
According to the following statement, even the USA and the European Union do not consider the PIRA as a terrorist organization.
"The United States Department of State and the European Union have taken the Provisional IRA off their lists of terrorist organisations due to the fact that there is a cease-fire." (see [[2]]).
The person who keeps typing this biased view has previously been accused of vandalism of wikipedia webpages. You can read more about him/her by clicking on his/her name and discussions about him/her. When his/her name is clicked on, it states:
"It is suspected that this user [Brandubh Blathmac] might be a sock puppet or impersonator of Rms125a@hotmail.com."
I don't even think that whether a politician is a U.S. Republican or Democrat or Green party member should be stated on a webpage that is honoring the victims of breast cancer. Their political affiliation has nothing to do with their disease. Whether or not they are a politician is sufficient to list them as 'famous' - not whether they are a Democrat or a Republican, etc. Bcsurvivor 21:39, 6 April 2006 (UTC)
Hence the word "former" (PIRA terrorist); Bcsurvivor: you surprise me, there is nothing in breast cancer activism that requires one to dispense with common sense. O'Hanlon was a part of an organisation that helped take away lives, however lucky she is to still have hers. There is nothing about her battle with breast cancer that somehow vindicates or means that her history should be forgotten. I hope that your strained interpretations in this regard are just that, and not anything that could be interpreted as a sympathy with her history. You can also comfort yourself with the fact that the British government is paying for her successful treatment as she is a British subject. We have worked together successfully to date; I hope our collaboration will not be ended by some kind of political extremism on your part. Brandubh Blathmac 00:30, 7 April 2006 (UTC)
After reading your history, Brandubh Blathmac, I don't want to have anything to do with you. I don't trust you at all. 66.19.244.190 11:28, 7 April 2006 (UTC)
And who the hell are you, 66.19.244.190??? At least I have a name, and a beautiful Irish one that I am proud of.
Brandubh Blathmac 03:10, 9 April 2006 (UTC)
Merge tag
[edit]There's a substantial list on the category pages for Category:Breast cancer survivors, which doesn't belong on a cat page but would fit in quite nicely here. ♥ Her Pegship♥ 15:19, 25 May 2006 (UTC)
- I tried to merge it, but the bot immediately replaced the names on the Category:Breast cancer survivors page. Bcsurvivor 17:38, 17 June 2006 (UTC)
- The merge has been accomplished. Bcsurvivor 15:20, 24 June 2006 (UTC)
Regular expression...
[edit]This is the regexp I used to add links to the people's name if there was none (I used Notepad++, should be PCRE): /\*([A-Za-z \(\)"]+)/ replace with: *[ [\1] ] (no space between the square brackets) 68.193.77.2 18:21, 3 June 2006 (UTC)
Mary Anning
[edit]Mary Anning was not a Stateswoman, she should be recorded under Scientists --jmb 21:05, 23 June 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks, jmb. I'll change it as soon as possible. Bcsurvivor 22:19, 23 June 2006 (UTC)
- Some other names from the UK for you
- [Linda Nolan] of the Nolans
- Diana Moran - fitness expert on UK breakfast TV in the 1980s (known then as the Green Goddess) has had a bi-lateral mastectomy. I saw one reference which said she was Patron of the UK Breast Cancer Campaign.
- Thank you. I added Nolan and Moran as directed, and I also added them to the List of notable breast cancer patients according to occupation with even more information about them. Thanks again! Bcsurvivor 15:46, 27 June 2006 (UTC)
Some other names from the Penguin Biographical Dictionary of Women, which I can search online
- Sarton, May (1912 - 1995)
- Belgian-born American poet and novelist. She died of breast cancer in York, Maine.
- Pechey-Phipson, (Mary) Edith (1845 - 1908)
- English doctor. She founded and endowed the Pechey-Phipson Sanitorium for women and children near Nasik in India before dying in Folkestone of breast cancer.
- Thank you. I'll add them as soon as I can. Thanks again! Bcsurvivor 00:46, 29 June 2006 (UTC)
- I was watching a programme last night about the final edition of Top of the Pops on BBC TV. This was followed by a further programme on Pan's People the dance group that used to appear on there - they are probably the most famous dance group in Britain. At the end it said of Flick Colby, the founder and choreographer of the group, "Flick returned to New York where she lives happily with her final husband George. She has coped with recurring breast cancer for twenty years. Pan's People visit often". There are two portraits of her in the British National Portrait Gallery which is a fair indication of being "notable". [3]
Merge suggestion
[edit]"It has been suggested that this article or section be merged with List of notable breast cancer patients. (Discuss)"
- This list differentiates breast cancer patients who are still alive from those who have died. The other list differentiates them according to occupation. Since over 200,000 people are diagnosed with breast cancer in the U.S. every year, and over 40,000 die from it every year, and millions are diagnosed and die due to it throughout the world, this topic affects many people directly and many people because they are relatives, friends or co-workers of breast cancer patients.
- The first thing that many breast cancer patients and their families want to know when they are diagnosed, is who else has or has had the disease. Also, organizations who need to solicit money or donations of time for research and education about the disease, would find both of these articles very valuable - and there are over 2,000 breast cancer organizations under the umbrella of the National Breast Cancer Coalition in the U.S. alone - as well as thousands of organizations throughout the world.
- There are numerous wikipedia volunteers under 'breast cancer survivors' at [[4]] who might be more than happy to keep both lists updated.
- It can be overwhelming for a newly-diagnosed breast cancer patient to see all those notable people who have died from the disease. As a result, it's advantageous to have this list where the deceased are separated from the living so that patients can concentrate only on the living for encouragement.
- When they are more adjusted to the disease, they can then examine the deceased more thoroughly; but when they are interspersed as in the category for occupations, they are constantly aware of the deaths.
- Meanwhile, people who are particularly interested in 'Actors' or 'Sports figures' or 'Business figures' would be especially interested in the fact that the information is readily available to them for requests for donations of time or money or just for personal inspiration if the breast cancer patients have a personal affinity to acting or sports, etc.Bcsurvivor 15:00, 24 June 2006 (UTC)
- If this proves to be the consensus, then I believe that the list titles need to more clearly state the differences. Doc 15:21, 24 June 2006 (UTC)
- I agree about the list titles. Do you have any suggestions?Bcsurvivor 17:49, 24 June 2006 (UTC)
- Merge. The only difference is the page design. The new list is superfluous as the original list (List of famous people with breast cancer) already has sections for survivors and deceased. I don't see the need to keep spreading this list all over wikipedia. There have already been two occasions when other lists have been merged into this one. Keep the list in one place so as not to confuse people. --Ezeu 04:58, 26 June 2006 (UTC)
- Do Not Merge - Of course this list has sections for survivors and the deceased. That's it's main reason for existence. The other list differentiates clearly between the various occupations, dates of diagnosis, ages at diagnosis and death, etc. Many breast cancer patients and their children are extremely interested in actors, musicians, politicians, or other occupations and are particularly interested in learning that those notable people in their fields of interest have been diagnosed and endured breast cancer. It's one of the things that a parent can do to reassure her children when she has been diagnosed. If a favorite celebrity or the mother of a favorite celebrity has been diagnosed with breast cancer, it can reassure the child that others understand more clearly what they are experiencing. Also, breast cancer fundraisers and researchers would find it easier to solicit help from celebrities with this list. The only reason that I linked them to other sites is because the person who created the List of notable brain tumor patients had recommended doing that, and that person was honored for the research and design of that site. Once it was brought to my attention that it wasn't wise, I stopped doing it immediately. 99+% of the work is done on this site and the other site. It would be an extreme waste of time and energy to merge either list. I agree that a name change would more closely reflect the true differences and values of the two lists. I'm waiting for suggestions before unilaterally changing the titles of the 2 lists. As I explained previously, the fact that the survivals and deaths are separated allows breast cancer patients and their loved ones to ignore the deaths until they are more ready to handle them.Bcsurvivor 00:16, 27 June 2006 (UTC)
- Merge. Axl 07:54, 27 June 2006 (UTC)
- Do not merge - It seems reasonable to keep two lists though more work involved in maintaining them but Bcsurvivor seems to do most of the work. If the two pages were combined then it would be difficult to keep so much information without the page getting very big. Ideally the names and details could be put into a database then this could accessed in different ways but I don't think Wikipedia is capable of doing this. --jmb 23:07, 29 June 2006 (UTC)
- Do not merge - the two categories/lists have different purposes and complement each other nicely. As the daughter of a victim of breast cancer, I like knowing that I can go to one list for updates and basic info., and the other for more detailed info. if needed. Thanks for your attention.
- Btw- shouldn't Axl need to provide a reason or explanation for his vote instead of just one word?? SiobhainO'D 18:33, 15 August 2006 (UTC)
- Do not merge' Breasts cancers suffers come to find information on the wikipedia, they need to see a list of all the people that survived, to give them hope. Having all those who died from it separately thus makes more sense. Someone famous they heard of got through it, and many other people on the list, so that gives them hope. Dream Focus 17:47, 1 July 2009 (UTC)
estimated # of deaths
[edit]The cite for the number of estimated deaths is a secondary citation. The source data come from the American Cancer Society: American Cancer Society.: Cancer Facts and Figures 2006. Atlanta, Ga: American Cancer Society, 2006.
These data are available online as well. Althogh NCI (the original cite) is a really reputable source for many stats, these estimates by ACS are widely used in academia and indeed are the ones the NCI themselves cite.
This is a nice page by the way. It is useful for having examples of well known people to be able to make breast cancer relevant.
external links
[edit]The external links on this article strike me as irrelevant to the topic at hand and generally linkspam. I will mark the list for now, but please comment if you have other opinions, otherwise I will most likely return and delete most of these links. -- Sfmammamia 01:33, 16 August 2007 (UTC)
- No comments in over a week, all external links have been deleted. I will monitor for link spam, unless a link is directly related to the topic of notable breast cancer patients, I will delete it. -- Sfmammamia 21:24, 23 August 2007 (UTC)
References
[edit]A lot of these people are referenced here to imdb. That is not a reliable source. Better sources should be provided. Who then was a gentleman? (talk) 22:54, 29 June 2009 (UTC)
- Indeed, this article has major problems with referencing. Many entries are cited to non-reliable sources, including IMDB and NNDB. In some instances, the sources only tell about the person and do not confirm that they had breast cancer.
- Additionally, the referencing style employed here, in which sources are cited as embedded links identified in the form "(see [127])" is discouraged at WP:Citing sources. It does not provide enough information to identify the source when a URL changes (as happens all too often). --Orlady (talk) 05:12, 3 October 2009 (UTC)
