Use in Other Media

[edit]

Grendel as a name has been widely assimilated into popular literature and video games, such as Final Fantasy and Creatures. In fantasy works where the name is used, it usually refers to a beast or monster. In science fiction, the name has been used to denote viruses and evil computer systems.

Brian Trent's novel Never Grow Old links Grendel to being of the same species as the monster Humbaba from the Epic of Gilgamesh. From the novel: "Humbaba was dead. The Cedar Forest lay open to the axes of men, and it would be nearly three thousand years before the very last of Humbaba's race -- a grotesque mother and her deformed lunatic son -- would face true extinction under the iron swords of another group of bearded warriors in a land far, far to the north."

Grendel is the name of a Dutch industrial music group that started out in 1997 under a different name

In Calling on Dragons, the witch Archaniz has a cat named Grendel.

In The Elder Scrolls III: Bloodmoon, the Uderfrykt is a mythical creature the character must fight after it kills and eats most of the people in the Thirsk Mead hall. This chain of events is clearly based on the Beowulf story, as it continues in the sequel, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion in which the Uderkrykte Matron may be hunted down.

Grendel is also the name of the Magician trainer in the popular MMORPG, Maple Story.

The story of Grendel also appears in the novel The Sea of Trolls, by Nancy Farmer.

Grendel is used in the MMORPG City of Heroes as the hero of the Troll Gang, who is responsible for the destruction of Eastgate or "The Hollows"

In the Robin of Sherwood episodes Herne's Son and The Time of the Wolf, a character called Grendel appears; he ends by sacrificing himself to Fenris.

Grendel is in the Monster in My Pocket series.

Grendel and his mother appear in Neil Gaiman's short story The Monarch of the Glen, a sequel to his novel American Gods.

Grendels are a race of controllable creatures in the "Creatures" series of games.

Grendels Arm is the name of a southern heavy rock band from Oakland, Maryland.

Grendel is the green Gigas in the console role-playing game Skies of Arcadia. A reward for beating him is the Grendel Wing, a boomerang weapon for the character Aika.

In the Brood War add-on to the real-time strategy game StarCraft, the Grendel Brood is one of the Zerg Broods.

In Mace: The Dark Age (a game for Nintendo 64 there's a hidden character called Grendel, which is dragon/demon like and carries a large warhammer.

In Spycraft: The Great Game for PC you must decode a character name Grendel's secret files using the book Beowolf as your reference point.
